Prolific singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell has passed away age 71 following an extended illness.
The news was confirmed by the official Twitter account for Caldwell.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Mary Caldwell, who is the singer’s wife, wrote. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘FLOXED,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love.”
In July 2021, Caldwell’s Twitter account revealed that he had to take a break from performing due to a “medical complication.” In August 2022, the account shared, “Please remember Bobby in your prayers.”
His music has been sampled by countless artists, including 2Pac, Aaliyah, Common, Kendrick Lamar, the Notorious B.I.G., and Lil Nas X among others. Perhaps his most famous track is “What You Won’t Do For Love,” which appeared on his double-platinum self-titled debut album.
After news of his death was shared, musicians like Questlove took to social media to pay their respects and remember Caldwell.
