Fiona Apple has shared a touching message on the death of Mac Miller.

Over the weekend, Apple shared a video recalling a discussion she had with Miller about producer/composer Jon Brion. Brion, of course, worked with Apple on multiple albums and collaborated with Miller on this year's Swimming.

"I just wanted to say that I'm very sad about Mac Miller dying," Apple says in the video. "I don't know why I feel like I need to express this publicly, but I guess I'm just realizing how great he was. I only met him once. It was, like, for a few hours and it was a small group of people but I really, really, really liked him. I wanted to stay friends with him and I never got his number. I remember that we were talking about music and I remember that he was talking about how much he loved Jon Brion, and now I just found out that Jon produced his last record so I'm gonna go listen to that and keep him alive that way. I wish I could have made music with him. He was a really good soul and he's still around, I hope."

In comments she sent to a fan-operated Tumblr account, Apple added that Miller was "so sweet and genuine and smart and tender and kind" during their meeting. "It's a big damn shame," she said. "I would have loved to hang out with him again."

Mac Miller died Sept. 7 at the age of 26. In a statement, his family asked fans to please respect their privacy during this difficult time. "Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26," the statement said. "He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends, and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time."
