After the deaths of his friends and collaborators Mac Miller and Avicii, Carnage took a sabbatical, working on his own health (both mentally and physically), and realized that his platform would be better suited highlighting bigger issues in the world. He re-emerged earlier this year and announced that he'd be embarking on his Reincarnation Tour, which was followed by the release of his Prinze George-featuring single, "Letting People Go," a song dedicated to his grandmother.
"Just like a lot of mothers dealing with the atrocities at the border," Carnage shared, "she also had her children took from her which included my own mother when crossing the border into McAllen, TX."
Today, Carnage shares the official video for "Letting People Go," which brings his grandmother's journey to life.
Carnage spoke frankly about the reasons behind this song and its powerful visual. "As a first-generation American, I am more proud than ever to be from an immigrant family. My grandmother risked everything on her journey from Guatemala into the United States as an illegal immigrant. She did this to create a better life for her family in the land of opportunity. I dedicate 'Letting People Go' to my grandmother and immigrants around the world. I am the American Dream and I am fucking proud of it."
"The 'Letting People Go' music video is my family’s personal story," Carnage continued, "but I wanted to share it with all of you to prove as immigrants anything is possible."
A portion of the revenue made from "Letting People Go" will be donated to the RAICES Foundation, which provides free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees living in Texas. Carnage himself is now working as an ambassador for RAICES as well. Hopefully, more artists can peep Carnage's vision and start utilizing their platforms to speak on the social issues that resonate with them.
