Since March 2014, the crab meats king Rick Ross has lost 80 pounds and dropped three full-length projects. This morning he dropped by Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club to announce his new studio album, Black Market, which will fulfill Ross' recording contract with Def Jam upon his album's release in December. Ross also introduced his fiancée,Lira Galore. He discussed his pending kidnapping and assault charges, which have led to his being on house arrest since July. And, inevitably, Rozay addressed the ghostwriting feud between Drake and his own Maybach Music Group lieutenant Meek Mill.
Despite Drake's "Back to Back" quip to the contrary, Ross insists that "ain't nobody get bodied" in the feud so far, considering that Meek Mill left prison,launched his first No. 1 album, and started dating superstar rapper Nicki Minaj all in the past 12 months.
In any case, Ross believes the tension between Meek and Drake will be short-lived. "I think this is what's good for the culture," he says, referring to the thrill intensity of the beef back when it was still fresh. "I really feel like they were two little homies in high school who fought over a pair of Js." When Breakfast Club co-host Charlamagne Tha God pressed Ross to explain whether he'd still be able to work with Drake despite Drake's having savaged Meek, Ross suggests that even Drake and Meek might mend their disagreement and resume working together sooner than you expect. "When the new Js come out," Ross says, "they back cool."
At the top of the interview, Ross elides discussion of his pending criminal case, "rebuking" co-host Angela Yee's suggestion that he might end up doing jail time for an alleged pistol-whipping incident. Separately, Ross addressed the civil lawsuit in which a woman alleges that she was assaulted by Ross' agent, Thaddeus "Black" James, at a hotel in L.A. Ross declined to speak at length on that case, simply underscoring that he was not directly involved in or physically present during the alleged assault.
Of course, Ross also took a minute to delight in the recent bankruptcy of his arch-nemesis, 50 Cent. "I'd probably be in my emotions as well if my first album were called, Get Rich Or Die Tryin', and I filed [for] bankruptcy," Ross says. "I guess his kidneys failed."
