Ama Lou’s star has been burning bright for a couple of years now, but even though the temptation to cash in and bang out a batch of transatlantic pop hits must have been high, she’s stayed true to her roots and her UK fanbase. As long games go, it’s already proving to have been a smart choice. Case in point: her latest single “Same Old Ways”.

A sleek and stylish slice of R&B excellence, it puts her smokey yet agile vocals on full show, playing to all the understated strengths that have made her such an exciting prospect in our homegrown scene. Playing to that, producer Maestro The Baker has given her an unassuming instrumental that guides her voice without ever being domineering.

Just as strong as the song itself, the new track comes with a visual that’s just as British. Director Mahalia John sets the scene in an old country estate where a lost-looking Ama and her friend are brought in by a stern-looking schoolmistress. Then, as the song kicks in, the curriculum flies out the window and the young singer takes her place as the classroom hero.

Hit play on the new video at the top and then make sure you listen to the rest of the EP that spawned the new hit, At Least We Have This.
