Lil Yachty is making his SNL debut memorable.
The news of Yachty’s performance was announced during Jenna Ortega’s episode that had musical guest 1975 on March 11.
During Yachty’s performance, he started with “The Black Seminole” featuring Diana Gordon and complete with a psych rock band. In his second song, he performed “Drive Me Crazy!”
Yachty is coming off the release of his latest full-length Let’s Start Here. The album was an unexpected pivot from his previous albums. During its rollout, he often spoke about his experimentation because he wanted to be taken seriously as an artist.
“I think I created it just because I really wanted to be taken serious as an artist, you know. Not just some SoundCloud rapper, not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit,” he said. “I wanted to be really taken serious because music is, like, everything to me. I respect all walks of music, not just rap and hip-hop, everything. So I think I wanted to make something to show the world just how great it was to me.”
Questlove became a fan of Let’s Start Here immediately after it dropped on Jan. 27. “After about 3 listens (and I thought I’d NEVER say this—-& not because “I didn’t expect this from Lil Yachty”——but just in general I didn’t expect this from MUSIC) How should I put it? I really really really really love this Lil Yachty record and I love when artists pull off a good departure record,” he wrote.
