Tech 9's Death Ruled a Suicide by Coroner

First reported by Philly Mag, Complex can confirm the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office in Pennsylvania has determined Tech 9—real name Akhiym Mickens—died by suicide. First Deputy Coroner Alexander Balacki said the cause of death was an overdose of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine found in Benadryl.

The 32-year-old rapper was pronounced dead March 24, just a day before he was scheduled to appear in court for a child pornography case. Court documents obtained by Complex reveal Tech 9 had been arrested in early January after he allegedly assaulted the daughter of his girlfriend. The Germantown resident was charged with indecent exposure and corruption of minors, indecent assault, possession of child pornography, and more. He was released on a $50,000 bond two days after his arrest.

Reports of Tech 9's legal problems did not surface until after his death.

Several hip-hop figures mourned the loss on social media, recognizing Tech 9's lyrical skills and contributions to the rap battle scene. Meek Mill, Kendrick Lamar, Lloyd Banks, Denzel Curry, and Lupe Fiasco were among the rappers who paid their respects.
