At the end of every month, we round up the songs and music videos by Canadians that were in heavy rotation. Throw some headphones on, kick back, and catch up on the gems you might have missed this month.
Big Lean f/ PARTYNEXTDOOR, "Stamina (Remix)"
Big Lean continues to build buzz by snagging a massive cosign from PARTYNEXTDOOR. The remix to "Stamina" made its debut on OVO Sound earlier this month, and becomes yet another cut from Lean to land onto the popular Beats 1 Radio show. "Pop Style" and "Work" maestro, Sevn Thomas, handles the production and proves that dancehall isn't planning to fade away in 2017.
Heat, "The Unknown"
a l l i e, "Wildcat"
Troy Phoenix, "Rex Gone Wild"
Troy Phoenix caught our attention late last year, when he dropped the self-produced statement track, "Rex Gone Wild". The staccato banger was one of December's most welcome surprises, armed with lurching piano riffs and plenty of bravado. Proudly hailing from the Rex Word collective, Troy turned things up a notch by joining local director, Adom Woods, to deliver deliciously gaudy visuals for the posse shout-out. "Rex Gone Wild" is an incredibly fun cut and a good indicator of things to come from the new Toronto artist.
Mac DeMarco, "This Old Dog"
Yung Tory f/ Lil Durk, "Run It Up (Remix)"
Kilmanjaro, "40 (Without Her Love)"
Austra, "I Love You More Than You Love Yourself"
Austra have always added a unique theatrical flair to their art. This attribute has been on full display throughout the rollout of their latest album, Future Politics. In October, the band released the stunning pastel music video for "Utopia". Then came the grandiose and grey short film for the album's titular track. Finally, the group delivered another video last week; this time for the haunting cut, "I Love You More Than You Love Yourself". The video's borrowed narrative from a real world scandal is enough to warrant its own review, but we're just going to let you appreciate it (and the song) for yourselves.
