Justin Vernon regrets airing out Eminem after the pair worked together on the Tyler, the Creator-dissing track "Fall." Hip-hop's go-to indie guy and the mastermind behind Bon Iver shared that he should have handled his frustrations privately in a new interview with Zane Lowe.
“I made that huge mess out of the Eminem song. I was just in a car wash, and I just tweeted,” Vernon said. “I should’ve just probably chilled out and actually just said, ‘Please don’t put this song out,’ It was very rude and I felt really bad about it.”
At the time of the song's release Vernon shared on Twitter that he wasn't in the studio to hear Em's verses and decried the homophobic taunts launched at Tyler.
Eminem has also expressed regret over the attack on Tyler, saying that it was done out of anger and that he didn't realize how many people it would hurt.
“With the Tyler, The Creator thing, I realized [it was wrong] when I said it, but I was angry when I said the shit about Tyler,” he said in an interview with Sway. “In my quest to hurt him, I realized that I was hurting a lot of people by saying it.”
Of course, not every Justin Vernon collab ends in controversy. He's a regular co-conspirator of Kanye West's and he shared his awe over Ye's ability to synthesize the work of so many different people.
"You can have music be cooking on a stove, like over here, and you can respond to it. If you're like Kanye, you can wait and there's going to be cooks in all sorts of kitchens and they're going to show you all sorts of stuff and you get to react to a lot of things," he said. "You get to say no to a lot of things until you're very sure you like something. That was very stunning to watch him just A: hear it all, and like have the bandwidth to communicate that well with that many folks."
Despite his respect for Kanye, Vernon said he "can't really kick it with him anymore on a personal level." Vernon made the comments in an interview with Pitchfork. "But I've got mad love for him, and we're still friends."
