Raised on a steady diet of her dad's collection of classic soul music, it's clear that 20-year-old, rising singer-songwriter Sofia Monroy has taken that education to heart. Her new single "Old Fashioned" builds on that foundation with a sound that mixes together her Mexican heritage and the Swedish pop that she surrounds herself with in her current home of Stockholm. The result is a brooding cocktail that's warm and soulful, yet still packs that Scandinavian dreamy chill. The video then adds a whole other dimension, splicing together nostalgic home video shots with graphics that look like an early '90s vision of the future.
"We hung out in the studio listening to old mariachi classics, and used those melodies as the starting point when we started to write. A few moments later 'Old Fashioned' was born. It sounds fresh but still has a reminiscent of the old days, far away from the studio in Stockholm. I really like that! Yes, it's a love song, but not one of the happy ones. I guess that I just was fed up with people who can't make up their minds and I needed to get that out of my system."
