An intersection in South Los Angeles will be renamed for the late rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced that the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue will become Ermias "Nipsey Hussle" Asghedom Square.

The decision to rename the intersection at the heart of the area in which Hussle grew up comes less than a month after the rapper was gunned down in front of his nearby clothing store. A petition urging the councilmember to name the intersection where Nipsey lost his life garnered nearly 500,000 signatures as grieving fans sought out ways to honor the fallen rapper, entrepreneur, and activist. The Los Angeles City Council will also officially add the rapper's contributions to the city into public record.

"Ermias Asghedom known as 'Nipsey Hussle' was an icon and West Coast hero," Councilmember Harris-Dawson said, per Los Angeles Sentinel. "Nipsey’s genuine nature allowed him to be a light to everyone he interacted with from family, friends, fans, and his larger community.  As a father, brother, and son, Nipsey was a rock helping to build an empire that will continue through generations. Nipsey will always be remembered for delivering a pure, authentic Los Angeles sound, his numerous philanthropic efforts, his innovative, community-focused business mindset, and his humble heart."

People looking to honor the rapper before the intersection makes the switch won't be short on options. In addition to the fan-driven vigils, the family of Hussle is hosting a massive memorial service for Hussle at Staples Center.  The free-to-attend event will end in a celebratory procession around Los Angeles before Hussle is laid to rest.  The event begins on Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m.
