YG is one of many artists who use their platform to speak out against gun violence, politics, and the police-related deaths of African Americans. The last track on Still Brazy is 2016’s anti-police anthem. It’s called “Police Get Away with Murder” and it contains a brazen hook: “Nigga we don’t give a fuck, we don’t give a fuck / The police get away with murder.”
Since the album’s release in June, YG has used the phrase “the police get away with murder” on several occasions to get his point across on social media. Philando Castile, a 32-year-old ccafeteria supervisor, died after being shot by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn. The aftermath was immediately streamed on Facebook Live by his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds. It was then that YG expressed his anger towards the act.
A similar reaction came from him when he heard about Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old man who was pinned down and shot twice by Baton Rouge police officers outside of convenience store. According to several news reports, they were responding to a disturbance call from an anonymous tip saying a man was threatening someone with a gun. YG's call to action was that the behavior was "unacceptable."
YG also recently responded to footage of Charles Kinsey, a black man, who was shot by North Miami police while he was lying on the ground with his hands in the air. They were responding to a call that a man was walking around with a gun threatening suicide. However, the real situation was Kinsey, who explained to police that he was a behavior therapist at a group home, was giving assistance to an autistic patient who had a toy truck in his hand. YG advised Kinsey to sue the North Miami Police Department.
YG’s latest response to Freddie Gray’s case, which was announced Wednesday that all charges were dropped against remaining police officers to his murder, shows his vehement hatred towards police.
YG will continue to make himself heard until the war against injustice and racism in America is over. Until then, he's never going to stop keeping it real.
