A$AP Rocky was a star at SXSW this past week, where he performed and talked about his upcoming album A.L.L.A. While Rocky's career continues to move forward at a rapid pace, he vows never to forget his late friend, A$AP Yams, who passed away back in January. In a recent New York Times interview, Rocky opened up about Yams' death, but also spoke candidly about his friend and everything they built together with A$AP Mob. “Yams was like a mystery,” Rocky said. “He was like the Great Gatsby.”

While Rocky reflected on everything they accomplished together, he also discussed Yams' drug use, and how he tried to help him over the years with the problem. “I caught him a bunch of times, but he would still hide it. He was kind of private about it. He didn’t want his mom to know, he didn’t want me to know.” On Friday, the office of New York City's chief medical examiner ruled that Yams died from an accidental overdose by acute drug intoxication. Rocky's full interview with the New York Times can be read here.

UPDATE: MTV sat down with Rocky to talk about his relationship with Yams and more. Watch the interview below.
