A Canadian man has been detained in Mexico after suspicions that he was involved in the murder of Kiara Agnew, a woman from Dawson Creek, British Columbia.

According to Mexican prosecutors, Agnew, 23, was found dead on March 3 at a hotel in the resort town of Playa del Carmen, just south of Cancun.

Agnew had gone to Mexico on March 2 with her boyfriend to celebrate her birthday, where she would have turned 24 on March 11.

A tweet from Mexican police stated, in Spanish, that they had detained a “person of foreign origin for the possible crime of femicide after a woman was found dead with possible marks of violence in a hotel located in the Xcalacoco neighbourhood.”

Policías de la SSPyT de Solidaridad aseguraron a una persona de origen extranjero por el posible delito de feminicidio, tras ser encontrada una mujer sin vida con posibles marcas de violencia en un hotel ubicado en la colonia Xcalacoco.

“[Kiara] didn’t want to lose her life at 23,” Katlyn Levesque, Agnew’s aunt, told Global News. “It doesn’t feel like it’s real yet, I don’t want it to be real. I’ve never wanted something to be more false in my entire life.”

Levesque explained to Global News that she had made contact with Agnew on Thursday via Snapchat. Agnew informed her aunt that she and her boyfriend were planning a day trip to go sailing, snorkelling, and then visit the Mayan Ruins.
