A 17-year-old girl was shot-and-killed at Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama.
Time reports that the shooting, which also left a male student injured, happened during dismissal time on Wednesday. Birmingham Interim Police Chief Orlando Wilson says that it may have been an accident but they are still investigating what happened on the school grounds.
"At this particular time, we are considering this accidental," said Wilson at a press conference, according to Time. "Right now, we have a lot of unanswered questions." To get more information, he's calling on the community to come forward with any details they might have.
"We are asking questions from the staff, the students, anyone who was in that area," he continued. "This should not happen in schools."
It hasn't even been a month since a shooter killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, sparking national outrage and adding fuel to the argument for common-sense gun laws. While it seems that Florida lawmakers passed a few new laws, there has yet to be a nationwide law to deter mass shootings.
In the meantime, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey offered his prayers to the victim and her family.
"I am praying for the family of this young lady who has tragically lost her life way too early," read his statement. "Every life is precious and, even though this was an accident, it reaffirms that there is no place for students to have firearms or other weapons on campus."
