GOP Delegates Launch Most Organized Attempt Yet to Stop Trump

Donald Trump not only has earned the distaste of Democrats but also faces a fair amount of opposition from within his own party. As they head toward the Republican convention, dozens of delegates are banding together to prevent him from becoming the nominee, The Washington Post reports.

They're not only opposed to Trump's views on gun control and his history of racist comments but also fear that his poll numbers don't bode well for the party's shots at the presidency. Their goal is to reform the party's voting rules so that delegates don't have to pick the candidate who won their state's primary.

Currently, these rules vary from state to state, but ever since Trump has been running, states have questioned whether they're set in stone.

The delegates haven't agreed on an alternative, but they do agree they do not want the nominee to be Trump. “This literally is an ‘Anybody but Trump’ movement,” Kendal Unruh, the Colorado delegate leading the campaign, told The Washington Post. “Nobody has any idea who is going to step in and be the nominee, but we’re not worried about that. We’re just doing that job to make sure that he’s not the face of our party.”

She's not the first to express this sentiment. A number of GOP politicians, including Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush, have denounced Trump, and a letter from the editors in The Boston Globe in March titled "The GOP Must Stop Trump" urged Republicans to find an alternative candidate. And, of course, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have both said they'll do whatever it takes to stop Trump.

It looks like the two parties can agree on something for once.
