A cyberhacking ring known as Evil Corp has been taken down by federal prosecutors, CNBC reports. No, seriously, the organization is really called "Evil Corp."
The ring, widely considered to be responsible for one of the biggest schemes relating to bank fraud within the last decade, was run by two criminals that live in Russia, Maksim Yakubets and Igor Turashev. They have been accused of computer hacking, bank fraud, wire fraud, and more.
The organization created this malware called Dridex that made it possible to take login information from banks, for example. Once it has that login information, they take the money out of bank accounts and then transfer it to their own accounts.
“Treasury is sanctioning Evil Corp as part of a sweeping action against one of the world’s most prolific cybercriminal organizations. This coordinated action is intended to disrupt the massive phishing campaigns orchestrated by this Russian-based hacker group,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement, according to CNBC. “OFAC’s action is part of a multiyear effort with key NATO allies, including the United Kingdom. Our goal is to shut down Evil Corp, deter the distribution of Dridex, target the ‘money mule’ network used to transfer stolen funds, and ultimately to protect our citizens from the group’s criminal activities.”
