A Kentucky man is in police custody after authorities say he shot his mom on Mother’s Day with a 22-caliber rifle.

As disclosed in a news release provided by Sheriff Tim Catron of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Monticello’s Jacob R. Small was arrested and charged with attempted murder, domestic violence and second-degree criminal mischief. Officials say the 22-year-old opened fire on his mother and another woman while they were leaving their residence on Grayer Ridge Road.

Deputy Jerry Meadows initially responded to reports of a gunshot victim heading to the hospital around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. He received an additional call that said Small was at a neighbor’s house waiting for the police to arrive.

Small told deputies he engaged in a verbal argument with his mother “over an Xbox controller that he had given to her as a Mother’s Day gift,” the statement read. Small disclosed to deputies that he retrieved the rifle and followed his mother and the other woman, neither of whom were identified in the news release, out to their car where he opened fire and struck his mother. Small led Deputy Meadows to the location of the shooting and police retrieved the rifle.

The mother was treated for her wounds at the Wayne County Hospital before she was transferred to the University of Kentucky Hospital for additional treatment. Her condition remains unknown at this time.

Small is currently being held at the Wayne County Detention Center.
