A woman in Taiwan made the decision to seek medical attention for her eye pain. This action led to something straight out of a child's nightmare.
People CTS News, a local Taiwanese outlet, pointed out this frightening story. When the woman, identified only by her last name He, went to the doctor, a shocking discovery was made: the pain she experienced was caused by bees that were living in the inside of her swollen eyelids.
The incident began when He was pulling weeds from the gravesite of a family member. After feeling irritation in her eyes, she attempted to flush them out using water, thinking dirt had somehow entered them. Doing so increased the amount of pain He felt, so she decided to go to the hospital.
Instead of a simple eye infection, doctors at Fooyin University found something much more frightening. Dr. Huang-chi Ting, the head opthalmology, found four sweat bees were latched onto He's tear ducts. "I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging their bodies," Dr. Huang said. The bees are said to nest around graves and fallen trees, so it's possible He came in contact with them while pulling the weeds.
If He had rubbed her eyes too frequently, she would have risked severe eye damage and potential damage. Thankfully, the 29-year-old woman managed to keep her hands away from her eyes, and is expected to make a full recovery. The bees were also pulled out alive.
