A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the coast of Honduras on Tuesday night, leading officials to issue tsunami warnings for much of the Caribbean. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake struck at 9:51 p.m. EST, about 27 miles east of the Great Swan Islands in Honduras. The tremor occurred roughly 6 miles below the earth's surface.
Tsunami advisories are currently in effect for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Buzzfeedis reporting that hazardous sea level fluctuations could reach both Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands before midnight. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center warns of tsunami dangers in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and the coast of Central America.
CBS affiliates in Miami are warning people to stay away from beaches and harbors "due to wave induced currents," but say that there is no threat to South Florida or the Keys at the moment.
After being originally recorded as a magnitude 7.8 quake, the tremor was downgraded to 7.6 by the USGS.
