The Weather Channel Goes After Breitbart for Denying Climate Change

You thought you’d seen it all in 2016, but here comes The Weather Channel getting into what might be the most unexpected feud of the year. The TV channel, which as its name suggests, normally delivers the weather, on Tuesday it delivered a clapback in response to Breitbart using a Weather Channel video to deny climate change. Climate change, as scientists continue to prove, is very much a thing and we’re still very much screwed with 2016 heading towards being Earth’s hottest year on record.

The Weather Channel posted its response on its site with a video included (for the visual learners out there). The video was also posted on YouTube, where it’s reached over 60,000 views. In the video, meteorologist Kait Parker called out Breitbart’s article published last Tuesday titled: “Global Temperatures Plunge. Icy Silence From Climate Alarmists.”

The article uses a video about  La Niña (a weather phenomenon bringing cooling temperatures) to say: "The last three years may eventually come to be seen as the final death rattle of the global warming scare." Parker calls that completely untrue and points out how Breitbart “cherry picked” this information to “mislead.” This is how The Weather Channel’s response was met:

The whole thing spun even more out of control when Breibart’s article was retweeted  by the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Sen. Bernie Sanders shamed the House Committee for its retweet.

The retweet inevitably helped spread more fake news. We’ve seen dangerous consequences of fake news in recent days, of course.

After fact-checking Breitbart’s article, Parker ends the video with a mic drop, saying, “So the next time you’re thinking about publishing a cherry-picked article, try consulting a scientist first.”  

Expect to see more articles like Breitbart’s in the next four years—president-elect Donald Trump believes climate change is “a bunch of bunk."
