The couple are college sweethearts, first meeting in class at the University of Texas in 1934. John was a guard for the football team while Charlotte was in school to be a teacher. They wed soon after they met, in 1939 during the Great Depression. CNN reports that they only spent $7 on the hotel room for their honeymoon.

John is also the oldest living former UT football player. For the last 84 years, he’s made it a tradition to go to at least one Longhorn football game every year. Both are still healthy and active—John exercises every day. Ten years ago, they moved to a senior living community associated with UT.

When asked what’s the secret to a long life and happy marriage, John told CNN, “Live life in moderation and be cordial to your spouse.”
