Steve Bannon to Headline New Yorker Festival

For some reason, former Donald Trump adviser and far-right conspiracy theorist Steve Bannon is headlining New Yorker's festival despite no one wanting him on the ticket.

Earlier today, New Yorker announced that Steve Bannon would be headlining their forthcoming festival.

The 2018 New Yorker Festival will take place on October 5th, 6th, and 7th. See the full lineup: https://t.co/BQrA2lkfPh #TNYfest pic.twitter.com/9mT57NuXS6

The former Donald Trump chief strategist and Breitbart affiliate sticks out among the rest of the lineup, which includes Jimmy Fallon, Bo Burnham, Boots Riley, John Krasinski, Jim Carrey, Haruki Murakami, and Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg alongside many more. Understandably, the reaction to this announcement has been overwhelmingly negative.

The New Yorker Festival will take place on Oct. 5 through to Oct. 7, with Bannon scheduled to be interviewed by New Yorker editor David Remnick. "I have every intention of asking him difficult questions and engaging in a serious and even combative conversation," Remnick explained. "The audience itself, by its presence, puts a certain pressure on a conversation that an interview alone doesn't do. You can't jump on and off the record."

Last year, Bannon was fired from the White House under a week after the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Before, during, and after his time in the White House he has been called everything from a white supremacist to "Sloppy Steve" by Trump himself. It's not shocking, then, that so many New Yorker readers are disappointed with the announcement.

Wow, shout out to the @NewYorker for giving a LITERAL platform to a LITERAL fascist. Y’all gonna book David Duke next? https://t.co/hzMY0sFm03

I was honoured to be invited by @theeconomist to speak as part of their prestigious #openfuture convention - but I cannot in good conscience appear at an event which chooses to dignify a neo-nationalist like Steve Bannon. Unless this decision is reversed, I will not be attending. https://t.co/8UcIpABcd4

I was scheduled to speak with Laurie on this panel, was not aware Steve Bannon would be involved. We were asked to answer the question "What's next after #MeToo?" the answer is certainly not normalising & dignifying white supremacy & misogyny. I'll contact the organisers today. https://t.co/EOBcKsnCYI

What New Yorker thinks “out of all the things I can do in this city, I’d like to go see Steve Bannon speak”?https://t.co/wOp6oVA1NE

I'm disgusted that @NewYorker Ideas Festival has invited Steve Bannon as their headliner. He's not a public official. He's not a legitimate intellectual. But he is a far-right organizer drawing intellectual cred from their platform.

My grandmother got me a subscription to the @NewYorker and I’ve kept it going for decades since her death. I’ll be sorry to give it up but I will if this doesn’t change. https://t.co/QXt226Zqys

By giving Steve Bannon a platform, the New Yorker is legitimizing a Nazi. This decision is in poor taste.

Please let the @newyorker know what you think. https://t.co/AW8EhyaL5I

Media outlets need to stop legitimizing Steve Bannon by giving him a platform. We should all be relieved his influence on our government has seemingly waned, not encourage its relevance. He’s a dangerous, destabilizing force in our country. He’s also *not newsworthy.* The end.
