An Illinois woman was arrested over the weekend for allegedly killing her newborn baby last year and deciding to bury the child in her yard so her family wouldn’t get upset.

Alvory C. Chavez Ramos, 23, was taken into custody Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, and as the Chicago Tribune reports.

Chavez Ramos reportedly gave birth to the child in her family’s home—specifically in a bathtub in an effort to conceal the birth—in Leyden Township between Oct. 31, 2020 and Nov. 30, 2020. She then allegedly covered the baby’s mouth so her family could not hear him cry, before the sheriff’s office says the infant stopped moving. She allegedly then placed the child in a plastic bag and buried him in a hole in her family’s yard.

The sheriff’s office reports that the body was found in May, and that an autopsy determined the cause of death to be a homicide caused by asphyxia, and Chavez Ramos was confirmed to be the mother via a DNA test with forensic evidence.

The woman told investigators that she hid the pregnancy from her family because “she did not want them to be angry with her,” according to the sheriff’s office. A judge set her bond at $95,000 during her first court appearance this week.
