Chanda Stewart and Lakesha Shaw were subjected to the bigotry of Nancy Goodman this week when she approached their table at the Bonefish Grill in North Hills. At the beginning of the video, captured by Stewart, Goodman is seen at a distance speaking to the waiter. “So I am shocked because this person had the audacity right here to come to our table and tell us that we are the rudest people that she has ever met,” she says behind the camera.
When Goodman notices she's being recorded, she looks at the camera and flashes a sadistic smile before shouting, "Hey girls."
Goodman then approaches their table and takes out her phone to begin recording the table of women as well. “I’ve had really good friends that are Black and I love them,” the white woman says. “We never said anything about color,” Stewart responds.
As the confrontation continues, Goodman tells the women they're being too loud, to which Shaw says, “Let me show you my money, it’s just as green as yours."
“Why are you all such stupid [N-word]?” Goodman yells before walking away. Stewart and Shaw then ask her if she calls all her aforementioned black friends the N-word, which Goodman then retaliates by saying, “They’re not like you.”
The video was then posted to Stewart's Facebook and has since gone viral, amassing more than 200,000 views since it was uploaded on July 23. Alongside the video, Stewart included the following caption:
“What was supposed to be dinner with my girlfriends ended up in us being called stupid [N-word],” she wrote. “The climate of the country today has some people thinking whatever they feel….they can say. The reality is if we were to retaliate with this same kind of hate and ignorance we would be called ‘angry black women.’”
During an interview with local news station WRAL, Goodman expressed absolutely no regret for her use of the racial slur, and said that she would use it again.
"Looking back on it now, I wish I would have asked the waiter to ask management if they would just quiet down. Instead, I went off on them, which I shouldn’t have done. But I had had it. It was out of my control to calm down my anxiety," she said. "I’m not going to say I’m sorry to them because they kept pushing at it," she continued. "I would say it again to them. They are the rudest individuals I have ever seen."
When she heard that Goodman was prepared to use the slur again, Shaw aptly noted the racism the old woman clearly harbors.
“The fact that you’re willing to say you will repeat that again shows me the hate that you harbor in your heart for the black African American race,” Shaw said in response to Goodman’s statement. “I don’t care what color I am. Give me the respect of being a human being, just like everyone else deserves.”
