Woman's Husband Detained By ICE a Few Hours Before She Gave Birth

A man in California was detained after he couldn't provide ID to two ICE officers. They took him on the same day his wife was supposed to have a C-section.

This is tragic.

CBS2 reports Maria del Carmen Venegas' husband was detained by ICE on the same day she had her scheduled Cesarean section for their baby boy.

"I feel very bad right now," she told the local news station in Spanish. Venegas says the two were on the way to the hospital but stopped to get gas on the way. That's when two ICE officers approached them to ask for ID. Venegas showed them hers but her husband, Joel Arrona, did not have one on him so they took him leaving Venegas to drive herself to the hospital.

ICE has since made the following statement: "Mr. Arrona-Lara, a citizen of Mexico illegally residing in the United States, was taken into custody Wednesday by ICE Fugitive Operations Team officers in San Bernardino, Calif. Mr. Arrona-Lara is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) [...] ICE continues to focus its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security. ICE conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and agency policy. However, ICE will no longer exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States."

But Venegas, along with many others, just wants the be reunited with her family.

"My husband needs to be here," she said. "He had to wait for his son for so long, and someone just took him away."
