According to a report by the New York Times, Donald Trump’s lawyers, John Dowd and Jay Sekulow, wrote a letter in January informing special counsel Robert Mueller that Trump cannot be charged with obstruction of justice, alleging that being President of the United States essentially makes him above the law. The letter “contends that the president cannot illegally obstruct any aspect of the investigation into Russia’s election meddling because the Constitution empowers him to, ‘if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon.’”
The letter indicates that Trump’s lawyers are doing everything in their power to prevent their client from answering any of Mueller’s inquiries or even agreeing to testify under oath. The fear isn’t necessarily that Trump has anything to hide, but that at any moment, the habitual liar that he is could come out, which could lead to the impeachable offense of lying to federal investigators.
As Trump’s lawyers continue to try and thwart a meeting between The Donald and Mueller, we could be nearing an unprecedented grand jury subpoena. In a report late last month from the New York Times, Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Mueller's investigation would come to an end by Sept. 1. However, that declaration was dependent on when Trump would speak with Mueller. Giuliani claimed that his client would be available to talk in mid-July. No word on if they're sticking to that plan.
