Richard Serra Plops His Latest Installation in the Middle of the Qatari Desert

Richard Serra has installed a sculpture in the middle of the Qatari desert.

Long considered the world's greatest living sculptor, Richard Serra just unveiled his newest work to the public, but it doesn't seem likely that many will be able to see his latest installation up-close and personally. East-West/West-East, which consists of four steel monoliths, stretches nearly half a mile through the Qatari desert, located 40 miles from the Doha, the city's capital.

It's a pity, and Serra knows it. (Imagine if the world had never heard Yeezus. This situation kind of parallels that.) The artist told The Independent his recent installation is "the most fulfilling thing I've ever done" and seemed to express regret over the fact that few will be able to see East-West/West-East. Though it's not his greatest work of art, the installation is still a sight to behold. Each of the four steel structures stands as tall as 16 yards, depending on the topography. The standing stones are level with one another and line up symmetrically.

Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who is the chairwoman of the Qatar Museum and perhaps the art world's most powerful woman, commissioned Serra to create the installation to coincide with his first ever show in the Middle East at the AL RIWAQ DOHA Exhibition Space and QMA Gallery.

Look like we'll just have to stick around and wait for photos to manifest.
