Nottingham-based menswear label Universal Works has recently unveiled its Spring/Summer 2022 collection, a seasonal offering informed by the distinct feelings of freedom and the need to explore.
Drawing on the work of mid-century American photographer Todd Webb, SS22 takes its notes from his book of previously unpublished images entitled Outside The Frame, which follows the revolutionary period that changed Africa, and its social movements, in 1958. Venturing across the continent, Webb reported a new sense of hope and positivity for the diaspora, all of which is now echoed through the imprint’s latest designs and accompanying lookbook.
Natural browns, blues and greens make up the collection’s main colour options, while reintroduced dropped-shoulders and geometric prints are combined with natural fabrics which have been chosen to adhere to the needs of warmer temperatures.
Key pieces from the SS22 line-up include an embroidered Holiday Shirt in Typewriter cotton and an eye-catching vintage-inspired Camp Shirt in a waffle-esque Delos cotton. Subliminal slogans have also been applied across the collection’s graphic Road Trip Shirt, while a Sri-Lankan-army-inspired pattern dresses the brand’s Patched Mill Fatigue Pant and Bakers Jacket.
