For his largest one-man exhibition ever, Ai Weiweibrought stacks of stools, bicycles, and crabs into Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau. The show, which opened April 3 and runs until July 7, is called "Evidence" and touches on many of Ai's recurring themes: his 81-day detention in a Chinese prison, his disgust with the government bureaucracy in his home country, and the injustices he's witnessed and experienced at the hands of Chinese authority.
In the face of such hostility, Ai has managed to put on this monumental show, even if he couldn't be in attendance; the dissident artist's passport has been confiscated for undeclared reasons, preventing him from leaving China. In Berlin, he offers "Evidence" for his beliefs, reasons why there is need for political reform in China.
