Whether you had an anime phase or spent your high school years actually getting laid, chances are you've seen the exaggerated facial expressions and over-the-top action sequences that have come to characterize Japanese animation. From its early days in the late 50s to current popular series like One-Piece and Bleach, many characters have influenced not only Cosplayers, but people's personal style.

That's why I took it upon myself to revisit those, awkward, awkward years and, like flipping through a high school yearbook, reached back into the recesses of my mind to think of the shows that had characters that looked memorable. And of course, the characters that made me want to buy their outfits. So here goes nothing, check out The 25 Most Stylish Anime Characters.

25. Hanamichi Sakuragi

Anime Series: Slam Dunk

Shohoku High School's all-star player is on this list for one reason only: his sneaker game. Their jerseys were very much based on the Chicago Bulls, but you can't deny that he was definitely balling in Jordans. From the Black/Red Jordan 1s to the White/Varsity Red Jordan VIs, Sakuragi's OG collection would put most sneakerheads to shame.

24. Togusa

Anime Series: Ghost In The Shell

Togusa's steez is essentially MacGyver with a gun. That khaki suit was slick, but the mullet is what sealed the deal. Batou had a pretty rugged style going, but those eyes are just so, so weird.

23. Jinnosuke

Anime Series: Afro Samurai

While he might have been a cybernetically-enhanced killing machine, Jinno certainly looked like Kanye West's Dropout Bear with a katana.

22. Kintaro Oe

Anime Series: Goldenboy

Even though he's kind of a pervy creep, Kintaro Oe had good intentions. He also had a pair of awesome Reebok Pumps, and looked good in a snapback and graphic T-shirt. The backpack and fanny pack add to his '90s throwback steez, he was like the dude that got into fixies way before everyone else did.

21. Tochiro

Anime Series: Galaxy Express 999

Tochiro's shawl game is on point. He was the best-dressed dude on Galaxy Express 999. Beneath that, he wore a Captain Harlock-inspired tee like a true Stan and an olive green army jacket. But we still believe that he predicted the floppy hat and shawl trend of 2013.

20. Lance

Anime Series: Voltron

While the other members of the Voltron force loved jumpsuits, Lance is like the dude that hated school uniforms and would throw it off at the first chance he got. And when your go-to kit is a leather bomber jacket and skinny jeans, you can't be faulted for that. The only other crispy guy on that team was Sven-and he was so cool that he died.

19. Ryoma Echizen

Anime Series: Prince of Tennis

Seigaku's tennis phenom had a style as strong as his forehand. The track jacket and hat he always wore was pretty cool, as were the Agassi-like colorblocked polo shirts he clowned fools on the court in. Besides that, he's also sported gear like white cafe racers and jean jackets, proving that even out of his uniform, he can still land some aces.

18. Shinichi Kudo/Jimmy Kudo

Anime Series: Detective Conan/Case Closed

It's too bad this master detective found himself reverted to the age of a child, but at least he knew how to clean up respectably. That means throwing on a bowtie and blue sportcoat, and some smart-looking round glasses. Sometimes he switched it up with contrast-collar shirts and even hoodies and T-shirts, but the round glasses and cow-licked hair remained style staples.

17. Satoshi/Ash Ketchum

Anime Series: Pokémon

For every kid that wanted to be the very best, like no one ever was-that meant getting a pair of cuffed jeans, a trucker hat, and a vest. Fingerless gloves sealed the deal. Ash's style tended to mirror Justin Bieber's in a way, getting a little cheesy futuristic as the series went on. The first Ash outfit was hands down the best-and most memorable.

16. Ichigo Kurosaki

Anime Series: Bleach

What's up goth ninjas? Ichigo Kurosaki is your anime style icon. As a Soul Reaper, his outfit combines elements of Japanese traditonal dress and suiting in a Takahiro Miyashita-esque way, so kind of awesome. His regular duds weren't too shabby either, and included fur-lined parkas and long, drapey T-shirts. Probably made by Rick Owens, but we can't verify that.

15. Alucard

Anime Series: Hellsing

This supernatural badass knew the intimidating power of high boots and a long, flowy topcoat. Essentially, he was like Vampire Hunter D except cooler. We can't really co-sign on the burgundy ascot, but the round sunglasses and black double-breasted suit are cool, and the aforementioned boots give it all an equestrian/military vibe. We can live with that.

14. Izaya Orihara

Anime Series: DuRaRaRa!

Bartender Shizuo dresses pretty fresh, but Izaya edges him out because that parka is awesome. It provides the perfect contrast to his black ensemble and makes him look every bit the hooligan he is. Besides being a parkour master, you also wouldn't want to mess with his switchblade skills.

13. Future Trunks/Trunks

Anime Series: Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball GT

Future Trunks was like, the dude you saw as a kid and thought "holy crap he looks awesome!" And in his time, he did. The middle part, the sword on the back of his awesome leather jacket, and his impratical pointy boots. It was like how every 10-year-old wanted to dress. Then in Dragon Ball GT that version of Trunks wore pleated shorts, a kerchief, and a khaki blazer. Definitely not as badass, but acceptable nonetheless.

12. Sanji

Anime Series: One-Piece

He may be a chef, but he also knows the recipe for a good wardrobe. His gold-buttoned double-breasted suit is proof of that, but his mastery of style can is evidenced in the striped shirt he wears underneath. Here's a guy who knows a thing or two about contrast. Like all proper style icons, he also smokes like a chimney.

11. Aburame Shino

Anime Series: Naruto

Time skips be damned, Shino was always the coolest ninja of Konohagakure. As an entry-level Genin he was often seen in a high-collar coat and his trademark circular shades. When he became a Chunin after the time skip, a teenage Shino channeled a goth ninja vibe in his hooded jacket, while maintaining his high-collared steez from his previous iteration.

10. Yasutora Sado

Anime Series: Bleach

Sado gets this spot because of his amazing burgundy motorcycle jacket. He's also not afraid to rock cream-colored pants, nor does he stray from patterned shirts. Also, given that he's Mexican, he also has Affirmative Action on his side. Just a little, though.

9. Go Mifune/Speed Racer

Anime Series: Mach Go Go!/Speed Racer

While the ascot may have been a bit much, but what's really amazing about Speed Racer is his ability to keep his white pants pristine. Shouldn't there be a little grease or dirt from all those laps? He also gets bonus points for the pop of red socks in his driving shoes. He's also rocked a sick cafe racer jacket portrayed in other media.

8. Lupin III

Anime Series: Lupin III

Arsène Lupin III , arguably Monkey Punch's most popular creation, was a master thief. Portrayed as a cocky ladies' man, it shows in the way he dresses himself. Loden green and bright red sportcoats aren't exactly how the most wanted thief in the world should blend in. Still though, he gets points for wearing a tie clip like a true gentleman.

7. Bean Bandit

Anime Series: Riding Bean/Gunsmith Cats

In his Riding Bean days, he teamed up with Rally Jackson in a sick motorcycle jacket and Rambo-esque headband. Later on in Gunsmith Cats Bean Bandit cleaned up his act with a waistcoat, Chelsea boots, and slicked-back hair.

6. Roger Smith

Anime Series: The Big O

Roger Smith was meant to be suave like Bruce Wayne, and it showed, from the slicked back hair and double-breasted suit, what set him apart was his sleek leather gloves and multi-functional wristwatch. See, instead of turning into Batman, Smith called out Big O, a gigantic robot capable of kicking all sorts of ass.

5. Nicolas D. Wolfwood

Anime Series: Trigun

The epitome of "speak softly and carry a big stick," this spiritual, smoking assassin was hardly seen without his Punisher, the literal cross on his back. With his wayfarer shades and dark navy suit, the brown oxford shoes went well with the rest of his killer ensemble.

4. Spike Spiegel

Anime Series: Cowboy Bebop

The Mars-born bounty hunter knows the benefit of a good uniform. His blue leisure suit usually has the sleeves nonchalantly rolled up, and he wears it over a faded yellow shirt, and slightly unkempt black tie. It doesn't hurt that his other accessories are a gun and cybernetic eye.

3. Shotaro Kaneda/Jimmy Sparks

Anime Series: Tetsujin 28/Gigantor

While he's not the only kid on this list, Gigantor's controller was a pioneer when it came to rocking a sportcoat and shorts. Usually accented with a dope tie, he was stunting as early as 1956, where he was often sporting a windowpane check coat in the series.

2. Kaneda

Anime Series: Akira

Before Kanye West and Eddie Murphy rocked the red leather kits, Kaneda had them beat. Neo-Tokyo's best dressed bike gang member looked awesome on and off his ride. His sleek style set a standard for badass anime heroes to come, like Vash The Stampede and his flowy leather trench.

1. Daisuke Jigen

Anime Series: Lupin III

Lupin's right-hand man had a style on-point as his revolver aim. The long hair, perfect goatee, and floppy hat make him an ideal target for street style as well as the authorities. No anime character ever looked sharper in a suit. And his understated style definitely overtook the brighter sportcoats of his best bud.
