Intro
Ah, science-fiction. Hands down one of the best genres there is—but you have to be willing to accept a few ridiculous aspects to fully enjoy it. Chief among them: the costumes. In the history of science-fiction throughout all the laughably bad movies to the indisputable classics, a belief exists that in order to properly display the future setting, or alternative galaxy or whatever, the characters should, nay they must, look absolutely nuts. Disney offers a reminder of that notion with today's release of John Carter, which finds the titular hero on an alien planet, fighting alien beasts...in a loincloth. Sigh. If that sounds absurd to you, read on—these 10 Worst Dressed Sci-Fi Film Characters are way worse.

Lando
10. Lando Calrissian
Portrayed by: Billy Dee Williams
Films: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
First of all, no disrespect to the pimp Billy Dee nor his space counterpart. Lando injected the Rebellion with some much needed color and contested Han Solo as the coolest mother in all the galaxies, but...what is really good with that cape, dog? All we're saying is, George could've given him some better fits because as it stands, dude looks less like a badass, more like an intergalactic tapdancer.
Terl
9. Terl
Portrayed by: John Travolta
Film: Battlefield Earth (2000)
Battlefield Earth is widely considered to be one of the worst sci-fi movies of all time, and we'd have to agree. It received a whopping seven Razzies when it came out, but the one category they missed was costume design. The whole movie is an eyesore, but nothing is more visually offensive than the look of the Psychlo race, particularly Travolta, who looks like Han Solo and Chewbacca's love-child.
Castor
8. Castor
Portrayed by: Michael Sheen
Film: Tron: Legacy (2010)
You can expect more sci-fi characters to look like this going forward, in this post-Lady Gaga world that we live in. What we don't understand is why a respected thespian like Sheen continues to take weirdo roles like this one once in a while. Jim Carrey wasn't available?
Simon Phoenix
7. Simon Phoenix
Portrayed by: Wesley Snipes
Film: Demolition Man (1993)
The costume design is a classic mistake in many futuristic sci-fi films. Directors either assume that everyone will trade individual taste for sleek monochromatic uniforms in the years to come, or do what Demoliton Man did with Wesley Snipes. If they're right, we're afraid of the future. When 2032 rolls around, we beg of you— leave the overalls and 'N SYNC hair bleach where it belongs: in the '90s.
Twins
6. Twins
Portrayed by: Neil & Adrian Rayment
Film: The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
The Twins were the coolest and most memorable characters from both the second Matrix installment and the franchise overall. Why were they so memorable? Well aside from their cool parlor tricks and ice cold demeanor, they looked CRAZY. White dreads (an egregious infraction in and of itself), white coats, pale albino skin—all white everything! Ghosts in the machine, indeed. They were sick villains, but good God, what eyesores.
khan
5. Khan Noonien Singh
Portrayed by: Ricardo Montalban
Film: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Your chest nudity makes us uncomfortableeeeeeeeee!
vultan
4. Prince Vultan
Portrayed by: Brian Blessed
Film: Flash Gordon (1980)
No, that's not Zach Galifianakis dressed as the god Mercury. It's just Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan, a character in the cult-favorite-but-everyone-else-hates-it Flash Gordon film from the '80s. If that's not a good enough sign to stay away if you haven't yet seen it, than we don't know what is.
Humungus
3. The Humungus
Portrayed by: Kjell Nilsson
Film: Mad Max 2 (1981)
It's a credit to Mad Max 2 that the movie was (and still is) highly regarded when the bad guy looked like The Humungus. We know that the desert gets hot, but damn homie! The S&M loincloth? Really? Actually come to think of it, if a guy wearing a hockey mask and that get-up ran up on us, we might take him seriously too. He doesn't give a fuck about how he looks, so he definitely won't give a fuck about you.
zardoz
2. Zed
Portrayed by: Sean Connery
Film: Zardoz (1974)
If you didn't know, the character of Zed was originally envisioned as a woman. This isn't based on any actual information, but it's the only reasonable explanation. What other reason could explain the greatest James Bond of all time rocking a futuristic Sports Illustrated swimsuit, thigh high boots, and the most daring ponytail a male has ever attempted? We hope he got paid a grip for his troubles.
Ruby Rhod
1. Ruby Rhod
Portrayed by: Chris Tucker
Film: The Fifth Element (1997)
Wow. A ton of respected actors have gone the mile for a sci-fi role, but has anyone done it as fearlessly as Chris? Of course today, thanks to those jumbo Rush Hour checks, you could never sell him on a part like this. But before he asked Jackie Chan if he understood the words that were coming out of his mouth, he was a bit more willing. We dare you to find costumes more garrish than Ruby, the androgynous talk-show host and unwitting sidekick. If there's worse than this, we're not sure we want to know. Enjoy the extended vacation Chris. You definitely earned it.
