On TV, Jon Hamm portrays one of the most stylish men to ever grace the screen. With one finely-tailored suit after another, Don Draper exudes confidence, power, and an unfuckwittable level of swag that help sell the image he's created. In real life, however, Jon Hamm is not as awesome. Look, of course dude's not that far away from his on-screen alter ego that he can't pull off something like a GQ or Rolling Stone spread. But when left to his own devices, it's quite easy for the homie to devolve into a sloppy mess, and the contrast is starting to mess with our brains.

Dude, you play one of the most masculine swag lords of all time. We're not asking life to directly imitate art, but there's a lot of room for improvement here. So, Jon Hamm, we hope you're having a great birthday. But if you really want to take this new year of life by the reigns, follow a few of Don's cues, which we handily highlighted for you with 10 Style Tips Jon Hamm Can Learn From Don Draper.

Pomade Is Your Friend

Or whatever product Donald uses. Look at the two images above. On the right is a slicked-back gawd who can bag any woman he wants in under five minutes. On the left...#Normcore at it's floppy finest.

Newsboy Caps Suck

There really isn't much more to say on the matter, besides this is Jon's most egregious sin. And he won't. Stop. Wearing them. It's like, he's a man of the '60s on camera and man of the Prohibition era when they stop rolling. Don's fedoras are the style of his time. Jon, take a cue and stick with the baseball caps.

Never Get Caught Slippin'

It's always a big deal when Draper gets sloppy and loses his composure in public because dude is usually always composed to a T when out and about. You definitely would never catch him being bamboozled to go out of the house, pose for a picture, or whatever scenario Jon found himself in in the picture above. Leave the rare pelt game to Montana, b.

Step Your Suit Swag Up

If there's one arena the man who portrays Don Draper can never fail in, it's the tailored steez. But the homie Jon has been coasting on that effortlessness and it's time to call him out. Just because suits are a layup doesn't mean it's OK to keep rocking basic threads. Ascend to the next level.

Casual Doesn't Mean Slack Off

In the rare occurrence when Don isn't suited up, he's still committed to killing the game in a fly polo and the like. Jon, on the other hand, routinely looks like he just fell out of bed wearing the clothes he's now out in. At the very least, invest in an iron my dude.

Adapt Your Style to the Enviroment

Don Draper started the most recent season of Mad Men outside his usual norm but still in style. While paid-vacationing in Hawaii, he did as the Hawaiians do, stunting in a fly island-print shirt and vibrant blazer. He moves with the same kind of chameleonic steez whenever he's in LA as well. Behavior like that is how lords become kings.

Control Your Image

Remember when Don spazzed on the New York Times profile? The gawd would never let his image be portrayed as tragically as whatever went down in this photo shoot pictured above. Was this for an Of Mice and Men production or something? Jesus.

Smoke

Even when he's at his most rat bastard, your disapproval for Don and his scoundrel waves goes away as soon as he lights one up (read: 7 times per ep). A one-way ticket to lung cancer hasn't looked this cool since the actual '60s; Lucky Strike is the OG fashion accessory.

Take Style Risks

One of Draper's most memorable looks came in the instant-classic "Signal 30" when Megan wife-pressures him to go in for the bolder look for dinner at the Campbells. And as female intuition would have it, he crushes the competition. IRL Jon Hamm would never pull off something like this, because he doesn't have the fashion sense to but also because he wouldn't even think to try. Gotta get out of the swag slump somehow though, bro.

Chill With the Baggy Jeans

Don Draper has probably never touched denim, but while we're here we might as well highlight Jon's pattern of ill-fitting denim. We're not saying go hipster skinny, but something's gotta give man, you're straight billowing at the ankles. The picture on the left especially, with the dreaded newsboy cap plus wack scarf Red Baron look encapsulates everything wrong with Jon's style, or lack thereof.
