Couples Style History: Jay Z and Beyoncé

Beyoncé and Jay Z have been rapping and singing about how they're styling on you for as long as they've been together. On "'03 Bonnie & Clyde," Jigga bragged "the only time she wear Burberry's to swim." He later excitedly announced that he had the "baddest chick in the game wearing my chain." Meanwhile cuts like "Upgrade U" featured Bey countering with a few style tips of her own for an unspecified man worthy of taking over the game alongside her.

Fast forward a decade or so later and the royal couple of music are still together, still enchanting pop and rap fans alike with duets both inescapable and undeniable, and still fresh as fuck, both dolo and together. And they're taking their act on the road, or rather, On the Run, finally.

Of course everyone's anticipating things like the set list and the set design, but also the duo's tour look too. Are they going to just come out independently fly as they would for a cameo at one of the other's shows, or on some matching steez like that time they ran through TRL? We won't know until June, but now's as good a time as any to reflect back on these two "outlaws" and the decade plus they've spent looking fresh enough to call the paparazzi on themselves. Word on the Internetz is this is the first time Shawn spotted his future wife. If that's really true, then this deserves to be framed and thrown up in the Met or something. If not, well then, enjoy Hov's hilarious expression and Bey looking like a fed up single mom who just got off a double shift and isn't into cat-calls from the corner boys right now.

Bonnie B and Jay Clyde hit TRL to perform their first song together in a strong couple's look that said everything you needed to know about their relationship even if they themselves were mum. You can tell which year this is without a time stamp thanks to the abundance of #NTDenim but the statement it made is still cute, moreso now in retrospect. Praise future deity Blue Ivy that they didn't, and still don't, go to the matching well often.

The Carter-Knowles have been shutting down the Grammys since basically the beginning of the relationship, and while Beyoncé is even more daring these days, her stage costumes have always been very kind to those of us who have to try not to drool while watching. This being the tight-lipped, leave spots at separate times era, however, means the performance probably came with way less PDA than this year's.

There's been a lot of talk recently that Jay Z doesn't exactly "dress his age," but if this middle-aged, wealth-Normcore look from back in the day is an example of the alternative, then snapback away, Hov.

"Déjà Vu" served as one of the first performances when these two started getting comfortable with not giving a fuck on stage—Jay would always deliver a rehearsed but still saucy slap on B's ass at a certain point in his verse, during which she'd grind up all over him. At the time skull imagery was popping off mostly thanks to Jim Jones, and Hov shamelessly hopped on the wave with this head to toe Rocawear skull-and-crossbones adorned alphet.

And today the part of Shawn Carter will be portrayed by his wife. The highlight of this oft-forgotten video is a meta-commentary on the couples' style flourish, when Yoncé raps half of hubby's guest verse in full Jigga Man garb: Rope chain, flashy shades and a clean white shirt-white kicks look. Throw in the A1 mannerisms and we'd say Bey aced the "role."

Typical fresh code alphet for the pair as they take a stroll through the home base, and during the time where Jay especially stuck to a routine of strictly black graphic tees. Of course, a few months later he'd address it on wax on the Blueprint 3 singles, first declaring that he'd only wear black for a year straight then contextualize that with the All-Black-Everything movement.

The power couple's first trip to Coachella coincided with Shawn's brief Admiral Hov phase as well as Beyoncé Steez Mode #320392, also known as "Hipster Bey," which still enjoys a resurgence every now and then.

Ah, the Nappy Hov era, the longest period of time he took recording an LP (Blueprint 3) and thus the longest he had to stick to his "no-Caesars-until-the-album's-done" artistic process, which then reared its unshaved head again when he and Kanye committed to making the Watch the Throne pipe dream come true. The fact that Beyoncé put up with Jigga looking this unkempt, twice, must be a testament to the understanding that comes from getting together with a fellow musician.

Courtside on the wood has always been a good place to look for these two, even before Jay's relationship with the Nets severed so he could start up Roc Nation Sports.

The President of Rap and the First Lady of Music on site to watch the inauguration and lowkey stunting harder than Barry O. and Michelle. And, if you believe Jay, swag wasn't the only thing they were floating on.

The gargantuan Rafaello chain does all of Hov's heavy stunt-lifting and more. Meanwhile, Bey's never looked more gangster.

Jigga had just dropped Magna Carta Holy Grail through his much trumpeted New Rules regime while Yoncé was no doubt in the planning stages of her move to take that idea even further by the end of the year. A shirt that spells out their new slogan in Latin seems kind of contradictory to the sentiment, but it was fresh, so who really cares? Better question: why were these heaters never marketed to the public?

Well this is a far cry from Jay mumbling on TRL about the "musical" respect they have for each other. The duo officially cemented "Drunk in Love" as the soundtrack to their #NewRules World Order with this year's PDA-heavy Grammy performance. And while Jay stuck to the dress code, B adapted her beach outfit from the video to please the censors—but thankfully, not by much.

SC hits the beach in his Magna Carter World Tour uniform and a clean pair of Bred 1 Js instead of sandals, because that Cam'ron diss still echoes to this day.
