The Best Outdoor Art Destinations in San Francisco

Nestled within a photo-perfect view of the Bay Bridge, Cupid’s Span definitely grabs the attention of many a tourist. A giant bow and arrow—commissioned by Gap founder Donald Fisher and his wife—it stands out against the area’s many skyscrapers. Created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the sculpture has been up since 2002 and obviously makes for great photo ops. One easy way to catch a glimpse of it without the crowd—take any outbound train and look out the window as you descend into the Embarcadero station.

If you happen to walk by Union Square, you might notice several tourists posing with giant hearts. As part of the Hearts in San Francisco project, these hearts change often and showcase the work of both established and emerging artists. Past participating artists include Andrew Schoultz, Eileen David, and more. Though the hearts' designs always change, the crowd never ceases to want photos so expect a bit of a wait if you want to snap your own portrait.

On a nice day, consider taking a hike in Land’s End to see the Eagle Point Labyrinth. Follow the signs and you’ll eventually stumble upon a labyrinth made of rocks and framed by a stellar view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Built by Eduardo Aguilera in 2004, the labyrinth remained a secret until more and more hikers spread the word. Enjoy the complexity of its lines from above, or walk through and see if you can make your way out.

Originally created for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts serves as an important part of history. Today, you can visit it to enjoy its Roman and Greek details in the form of high columns and a rotunda. A small lake nearby houses plenty of ducks, seagulls, and geese. After wandering through the Palace, sit on a patch of grass nearby for a memorable view.

One of the most famed alleys in the city, Clarion Alley boasts a number of murals concentrated into one area. Hidden between 17th and 18th streets—by Mission and Valencia—the alley resulted from the efforts of street artists back in 1992. Each October, new artists take on the wall and transform it. As a historical part of the city, the alley not only offers a wide range of style but also becomes a platform for artists to address important community issues.

Similar to Clarion Alley, Lilac Alley also houses the work of a number of artists. Located in between Mission and Capp from 24th to 26th streets, the alley also plays host to a number of street artists. Less popular by tourists, the alley features a number of tags, portraits, and more.

Also located within the Mission—an area with plenty of outdoor art—a wall on Valencia between 23rd and 25th constantly changes its look. From wheatpaste pieces to posters, the wall morphs into something new as artists add more and more layers. The wall particularly attracts some out-of-town artists and serves as a space for plenty of political pieces too.

The Presidio in and of itself warrants a visit on nice weekends for its many trails and the nearby Baker Beach. But it also houses some incredible pieces by artist Andy Goldsworthy. A structure measuring more than 90-feet tall, Spire is made up of 38 cypress trunks. Wood Line uses eucalyptus branches to create a curving line in a gap between cypress trees. You can find Spire near the Arguello gate and Wood Line near Lovers’ Lane. Both serve as a welcome reprieve from the city’s chaos—a reminder that you don’t have to go far to see nature.

Erected back in 2008, Ugo Rondinone’s three sculptures, Moonrise Sculptures: March, October and December, are equal parts whimsy and imagination. The aluminum sculptures have been likened by many a viewer to the esthetic of Tim Burton. They look especially eerie at night, when the light hits them and creates interesting shadows.
