Fashion Week Makes $900 Million for New York City

This year New York Fashion Week has made a lot of changes, but one thing that continues is the millions of dollars it creates for the city.

Yesterday, congresswoman Carolyn Maloney announced that Fashion Week has brought in almost $900 million to the city this year, WWD reports. The economic boom, created by the 8 days of shows and 308 registered events, has earned more than the millions of dollars made from the NYC Marathon, the 2014 Super Bowl in New Jersey, and the US Open in Flushing.

"The fashion industry puts a good number of New Yorkers to work — it's not just about glitz and glamour," Maloney said. Another report released earlier this year by Maloney, found that the fashion industry in NYC employs over 180,000 people.

The congresswoman believes that New York has surpassed Paris, Milan, and London, as the world's fashion capital and hopes to keep the revenue coming in every season. She has proposed incentives like a prize for the NYC manufacturer with the greatest number of apparel exports, to keep the business booming.
