25 Photographers to Watch in 2013

It only becomes more apparent as time goes on that photography can no longer be defined by the stringent trappings with which it was once traditionally associated. While by no means complete, this list features some of the most interesting artists working partially, primarily, or entirely in this ever-evolving and elastic medium as we come into 2013. Based in: London

The youngest photographer on our list, Bruno Zhu (born 1991 in Porto, Portugal), recently presented his compositionally compelling work through Carlos/Ishikawa at A PETITE FAIR, a four-gallery event held at Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art during the Amsterdam Art Weekend. This showcase followed a solo exhibition entitled Grass Warm Trifecta at the London gallery last March, which featured a meditative series of 6 x 4-foot c-prints. Zhu has also published a number of beautiful handmade books; one of the most recent, The Palace Explodes The Shrimp Bail, When The Flower Want To Oxygen and Nutrition, I Will Help You Too Much, a co-venture with fellow photographer, Mengxi Zhang, was featured in Binding Image's December art book exhibition at MuzyQ in Amsterdam. Look out for further development of his Turbo series in 2013.

After graduating from UC San Diego's MFA program in 2011, Artie Vierkant (born 1986 in Brainerd, MN) held an eponymous solo exhibition at International Art Objects in Los Angeles and garnered critical attention that positioned him well for 2012, which saw solos at Higher Pictures in New York and The Green Room in London, as well as group shows at Rod Barton, Hillary Crisp Gallery, Seventeen Gallery, Jacob's Island, Carlos/Ishikawa and the ICA in London, Import Projects in Berlin and Kansas Gallery, Room East, Foxy Production, Higher Pictures (which he also curated) and Stadium in New York. 2013 projects include one man shows at Exile in Berlin (January) and New Galerie in Paris (September), and a group show at Brand New Gallery in Milan. Recently listed on "Forbes' 30 Under 30: The Bright Young Stars Of Art And Style" and The L Magazine's "5 Art Stars You Need To Know," we are clearly not the only ones who think he is one to watch.

Based in: Huntington Beach

Ed Templeton's newest zine, a collaboration with fellow photographer Clint Woodside that runs 60 pages and includes the series Make-Up Girls, was recently declared, like most of his sought-after, limited edition publications, sold-out. This past winter, the popular photographer (born 1972 in Orange County, CA), whose raw black-and-white works present an authentic document of skateboard culture and the youth of urban America, was represented at both the no found photo fair in Paris and Art Basel in Miami Beach. He begins 2013 with Memory Foam, a solo exhibition on view at Roberts & Tilton in Los Angeles through mid-February, followed by another solo at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp in the spring.

Based in: Brooklyn

Kate Steciw (born 1979 in Bethlehem, PA) had three solo exhibitions in 2012: Boundless Hyper at toomer labzda and Popular Options at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in New York, and Live, Laugh, Love at The Composing Rooms in London. Her digitally distorted photographic works were also on view in group shows at Wilkinson Gallery in London, Higher Pictures, Printed Matter, toomer labzda, Foxy Production and Stadium in New York, Prairie Productions in Chicago, Gregor Staiger Gallery in Zurich, Friends of Freiheit in North Adams, MA, Nudashank in Baltimore, and Hungry Man in San Francisco over the course of the year. The early part of 2013 brings three more group shows: a four-person at Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles, Color Shift curated by Jordan Tate in New York, and The Web is a Lonely Place; Come Play at The Center for Photography at Woodstock.

Mariah Robertson's painterly photography collages the figurative with the abstract in an elaborate process that involves oversaturating hues and exposing objects directly onto the paper; in larger presentations, such as her 2011 solo at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, the brightly colored finished product will assume an unconventional sculptural form and unravel from the ceiling, taking over the gallery space as it runs the course of the walls and floor. Even when framed and hanging in more traditional fashion on the gallery wall, however, her works retain a sense of this unbridled freedom. In 2012, Robertson (born 1975 in Indianapolis) presented a solo project at NADA New York with American Contemporary and a solo show at Grand Arts in Kansas City, MO. Her work was included in group shows at the Saatchi Gallery in London, Lora Reynolds Gallery in Austin, Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, The Hort Family Collection, Jack Shainman Gallery and Lehman College Art Gallery in New York, and Acme and M+B in Los Angeles. She is also featured in New York Close Up, Art21's documentary film series devoted to New York-based artists in the first decade of their professional career.

Jon Rafman (born 1981 in Quebec) exhibited excerpts from The Nine Eyes of Google Street View, an ongoing project in which the photographer creates large-scale works based on screen captures culled from the search engine's map function, in solos at Angell Gallery in Toronto, the Saatchi Gallery in London, and M+B and International Art Objects in Los Angeles in 2012. The two LA shows also featured works from his remarkable New Age Demanded series. In addition to a solo at American Medium in New York and participation in Public: Collective Identity | Occupied Spaces at the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA) in Toronto, Moscow Photo Biennale and ART HK, Rafman featured in group shows at Outpost in Norwich, MANEGE Central Exhibition Hall in Moscow, Luis Adelantado Gallery in Mexico City, and the William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticut in Storrs in 2012. This year, Rafman will premiere a new video entitled Remember Carthage at New York's New Museum as part of their New Art Online series. His 2013 will also include solo shows at The Photographers' Gallery and Seventeen Gallery in London and a four-person group show at Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles.

Eileen Quinlan (born 1972 in Boston) makes bold photographic works that range from bright abstractions to dark, organic landscapes; created by taking detail shots of commonplace objects and materials, they are captivating in their use of light, color, and scale. Quinlan participated in a number of group exhibitions in 2012, including Blind Cut at Marlborough Gallery and Accrochage at Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York, Second Nature: Abstract Photography Then and Now at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, and Printed at Mai 36 in Zurich. Her work was also on view at the inaugural Frieze New York in Miguel Abreu's booth. The highlight of last year, however, was unquestionably her September solo exhibition, Twin Peaks at Campoli Presti in London. Most recently, she mounted Y? O! G... A., a collaboration with Matt Keegan at The Kitchen in New York.

Although she just graduated from UCLA's MFA program, Marina Pinsky (born 1986 in Moscow), is finding that her career is off to a strong start. In the past twelve months alone, she has had a solo show at Exercise Projects in Vancouver, presented a special project at LACMA's Art Rental and Sales Gallery, had her MFA Thesis Show at UCLA's New Wight Gallery, and mounted the two-person exhibition Beautiful Young Men with Mira Dancy at Night Gallery in Los Angeles. She also participated in New History at Guest Spot in Baltimore, Bulletin Boards at Venus Over Manhattan in New York, All Visual Boston Slideshow at Spectacle in Boston and a pop-up show at 504 Chung King Road in Los Angeles. Amongst her 2013 projects is the group show Che Mondo, curated by Carole Ann Klonarides and opening at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in February.

Based in: London

Eddie Peake's artistic practice is centered around performance, but it is his documentation of those performances that forms the basis of and infuses energy into his tangible works, which frequently encompass layers of photography and painting. Peake (born 1981 in London) ended 2011 with the solo exhibition Boydem, which ran through February, 2012 at Mihai Nicodim in Los Angeles. The following month, he opened a solo at Cell Project Space in London and staged the performance TOUCH at the Royal Academy of Arts. Summer of 2012 saw the opening of solo exhibition Call 2 Arms at Galleria Lorcan O'Neill in Rome, as well as performances of Amidst A Sea Of Flailing High Heels and Cooking Utensils; Part 1 held in the Tanks at the Tate Modern, while Part 2 took place at Chisenhale Gallery. In October, a two-person show with artist Prem Sahib opened at Southard Reid, while Creating and Collapsing a Drama, or How It Must Feel to Be an Ill Dog Wearing One of Those Plastic Head Funnels was performed at the David Roberts Art Foundation. His next solo opens this March as part of White Cube's "Inside the White Cube" series.

Author, geographer, and technological innovator Trevor Paglen (born 1974 in Maryland) has received international recognition for his eerie, otherworldly photographs. To promote his latest project, The Last Pictures (a five-year project commissioned by Creative Time involving the assistance of materials scientists from MIT, which resulted in a book that comprises 100 images influenced by years of interviews with leading minds in philosophy, science, art and anthropology), Paglen gave talks at LACMA, SFMOMA, the Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C., Goethe-Institut in Amsterdam, ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Moderna Galerija in Ljubljana, SALT in Istanbul, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, MoMA and the MIT List Visual Art Center in Cambridge, MA. He also participated in a number of group exhibitions in 2012, including How Much is Fascism at BAK (basis voor actuele kunst) in Utrecht, More Real? Art in the Age of Truthiness at SITE Santa Fe, In the Holocene at MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Object Fictions at James Cohan Gallery in New York, Image Counter Image at Haus der Kunst in Munich and Ministry of Truth at Boers-Li Gallery in Beijing. His work was also featured in The Liverpool Biennial, The Fourth Guangzhou Triennial, and The Brighton Photo Biennial. February 2013 will see Paglen's debut solo at Metro Pictures in New York.

Carter Mull's inventive manipulation of the photographic medium has assisted him in creating an exciting body of work that continues to grow and diversify. His 2012 projects included the Venice Beach Biennial, where he set up a photo booth on the boardwalk in which visitors could have their picture taken in the style of an obituary photograph, and Needles in the Camel's Eye, a group show at Thomas Duncan Gallery in Los Angeles. This month in LA, Mull (born 1977 in Atlanta) will have a solo at Marc Foxx, while P&CO., the publishing/media collective founded and operated by Mull, fellow artist Jesse Willenbring and curator Aram Moshayedi, will have a group show at Thomas Duncan that focuses on the continued use-value of the readymade. Also in January: the group exhibition Beyond The Object at Brand New Gallery in Milan.

For his debut Scandinavian solo exhibition, on view at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen from January-May 2013, Leigh Ledare (born 1976 in Seattle) has compiled a body of photographic and text-based work that examines the intimacy of human relations, with an idiosyncratic focus on his mother and ex-wife. The show, entitled Leigh Ledare, et.al, was first exhibited at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels last Fall. Ledare also had solo shows at Michele Didier in Paris, Pilar Corrias in London, and The Box in Los Angeles in 2012, as well as group shows at Galerie Nikolaus Ruzicska in Salzburg, CCA Kunsthalle Andratx, and Galerie Michel Rein in Paris. His work is currently included in the exhibition Privacy at Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, on view through February 3. He will have a solo exhibition this June at Office Baroque in Antwerp.

The Israeli photographer (born 1977 in Tel Aviv) currently has a solo at White Cube in Hong Kong, the sixth he opened in 2012 (the others were held at The Kitchen in New York, David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles, Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan, Rat Hole Gallery in Tokyo and Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo). Group shows were also numerous for Lassry last year, taking place at the Zamek Culture Center in Poznan, Jewish Museum Vienna, Baltimore Museum of Art, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, amongst others. This year, Lassry has a solo exhibition at Galerie Francesca Pia in Zurich. He will also be included in the following group shows: Film as Sculpture / Sculpture as Film at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels, Beg Borrow and Steal, organized by the Rubell Family Collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum, and The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things curated by Mark Leckey at the Bluecoat in Liverpool. The latter exhibition will travel to Nottingham Contemporary and the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea.

One of the highlights of Frieze Week New York 2012 was Of An Instance, a Chelsea pop-up exhibition organized by the Andy Warhol Museum that paired Polaroids by Warhol with an extensive range of work (multi-exposure single Polaroids, Polaroid collages, painting and film) by Jeremy Kost (born 1977 in Corpus Christi, TX). Funded by Hugo Boss, the show served as a prelude to Friends with Benefits, Kost's solo at the Pittsburgh institution, which opened on December 1 and remains on view through January 27. Kost's 2012 also included a solo at Galerie Nuke in Paris and group shows at NRW-Forum in Dusseldorf and Grey Area, Freight + Volume and RH Gallery in New York, amongst others. This year, he will participate in White Boys, curated by Hank Willis Thomas, at the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, I Killed My Father, I Ate Human Flesh, I Quiver With Joy | An Obsession with Pier Paolo Pasolini, organized by Invisible Exports at Allegra LaViola Gallery in New York, and Young Americans, curated by Simmy Swinder at Gajah Gallery in Singapore. He will also have a solo at Angstrom Projects in Dallas, with possible solos to follow in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Look out for the release of Oh! U Pretty Things, his second monograph, in the fall.

Whether it is in his landscapes, portraits or large-scale abstractions, Raphael Hefti (born 1978 in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland) is pushing important aesthetic and conceptual boundaries in contemporary photography. In 2012, his solo projects included Inside the White Cube at the White Cube Project Space in Bermondsey, Thermit Welding at SALTS in Basel and Launching Rockets Never Gets Old at the Camden Arts Centre in London. Winner of last year's Swiss Art Award, he also had a two-person show with Dominique Figarella at Art:Concept in Paris and participated in the group exhibitions La jeunesse est un art at Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau, Minimal Myth at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Straight Up at Family Business in New York, Mocha non truth at Cul De Sac in London, and Du monde clos à l'univers infini at Le Quartier in Quimper, France.

While K8 Hardy (born 1977 in Fort Worth, TX) is also recognized as a multifaceted filmmaker and performance artist, photography has always been at the core of her artistic practice. Her work attacks stereotypes and confronts gender issues with a humor that always creates exciting dialogue. The past year has been the most significant of her career to date, with a solo exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary, Squat#1, a group exhibition organized by Balice Hertling, Nilufar Gallery and Dimore Studio at a private apartment space in Paris, and participation in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, at which she showcased a selection of photographs and sculpture, in addition to staging a fashion show performance piece that saw models walk a runway designed by Oscar Tuazon.

Award-winning artist Cyprien Gaillard (born 1980 in Paris), whose broad practice spans sculpture, painting, etching, video, performance, large-scale outdoor interventions and, of course, photography, exhibited at Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art), Jewish Museum Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, Schinkel Pavilion in Berlin, QUAD Gallery in Derby and Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, amongst other locations, in 2012. His work is currently on view at Espai Cultural Caja Madrid in Barcelona, Galerie Edouard Manet, Centre d'art contemporain in Gennevilliers, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012 in Kerala, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich and Saline Royale – Cite des utopies in Arc et Senans. Highly anticipated 2013 solos will take place at MoMA PS1 in New York (January 20 – April 8) and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (April 20 – July 28). Gaillard will also feature in a group show entitled Modernity? Perspectives from France and Turkey (January 16 – May 16) at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.

In the years following her first solo museum show (at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in 2010) and inclusion in high-profile group shows such as The Generational: Younger Than Jesus (the New Museum, 2009) and Greater New York (MoMA PS1, 2010), the career achievements of LaToya Ruby Frazier (born 1982 in Braddock, PA) have only grown more numerous and impressive. Not only did her intensely personal, sociopolitical work feature in the 2012 editions of the Daegu Photo Biennale and Whitney Biennial, group shows at Galerie Michel Rein in Paris (who took her work to Miami this past December for a solo project in Art Basel's Art Positions section), NURTUREart in Brooklyn, Benrimon Contemporary and Yancey Richardson in New York and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, and Inheritance, a comprehensive survey of her work, accompanied by films by fellow Braddock creative, Tony Buba, at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, she gave over twenty lectures and artist talks and was the recipient of numerous awards and residencies last year. She was also appointed critic in photography at Yale University. Coming up in 2013: the solo shows A Haunted Capital at the Brooklyn Museum in March and Perspective 182 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in June.

For Walls at A Palazzo Gallery, which recently closed at the Breschia-based space, Brendan Fowler (born 1978 in Berkeley, CA) created a series of intriguing large-scale structural framework pieces that fuse elements of photography, sculpture and raw construction. These works were showcased alongside more traditionally presented photographs, as well as several incorporating his trademark experimentation with broken and layered frames. 2012 was a busy year for Fowler, with group shows in Europe and across the U.S., including Only Parts of Us Will Ever Touch Parts of Others, curated by Timothee Chaillou, at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris, Raze; Revert; Repeat at Pepin Moore in Los Angeles, Business Innovations for Ubiquitous Authorship, presented by Higher Pictures and Artie Vierkant at Higher Pictures in New York, and three separate exhibitions (in July, September and October) at Shane Campbell Gallery in Chicago.

Ryan Foerster (born 1983 in New Market, Ontario), who makes zines and short films when he isn't taking photos, has enjoyed media coverage from a wide range of outlets, including VICE, Interview Magazine, The New Yorker and The New York Times, in the past few months. In 2012, he had solos at C L E A R I N G in Brussels, Martos Gallery in New York (with Ben Schumacher) and Shoot The Lobster in Miami. He also took part in group shows at Brand New Gallery in Milan and Room East in New York, and was featured in Millenium Magazines at MoMA and the 2012 Bridgehampton Biennial. This year, Foerster has a two person show with John Patrick Walsh coming up at David Petersen Gallery in Minneapolis and group shows at Ambach and Rice in Los Angeles, Art:Concept in Paris and Shoot The Lobster in Dusseldorf. He will present a solo booth at The 2013 Armory Show with C L E A R I N G.

2012 was a good year for fans of the multifaceted Sam Falls (born 1984 in San Diego): there were at least eighteen opportunities to see his work in gallery shows, not to mention multiple appearances at art fairs! This staggering number includes not one, but two solos at M+B alone, the second mounted less than six months after the first closed. Before, in between and after, the gallery showed his work at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Art Brussels and Paris Photo. Falls' non-photographic work was also a highlight of the Sculpture Park at Frieze London 2012, where it was presented by International Art Objects, whose February solo with the artist ran concurrent to the first of M+B's. The gallery waited just four months before showing his work again in their space, this time in a four person exhibition. In between, they took him to New York's INDEPENDENT art fair. Falls also had a May solo with American Contemporary, the New York-based gallery that showcased work at the most recent NADA Miami and will do so again at Art Los Angeles Contemporary in January. The remainder of the aforementioned sea of shows, which mingled photography with sculpture and works on steel and unstretched canvas, took place in solo and group settings at Luce Gallery in Turin, Marta Cevera in Madrid, Karma, Nicole Klagsburn, 11 Rivington and Printed Matter in New York, Brand New Gallery in Milan, Michael Benevento in Los Angeles, Grimm Gallery in Amsterdam, Modern Collections in London, OHWOW in Miami, Twig Gallery in Brussels and Pedro Cera Gallery in Lisbon. Falls' 2013 plans include a solo at Ribordy Contemporary in Geneva and a three person show at T293 in Naples.

ARTINFO recently named Toronto gallery Clint Roenisch's September solo with Jessica Eaton (born 1977 in Regina, Saskatchewan) one of Canada's top shows of the fall. Just two months later, Eaton, who was featured on the cover of the British Journal of Photography in March, followed up with another well-received solo exhibition, this time at M+B in Los Angeles. She also took part in the 2012 renditions of the Daegu Photo Biennale, Flash Forward Festival in Boston and International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyeres, and contributed to group shows at Higher Pictures, The Hole and Jen Bekman Gallery in New York, Blanket Gallery and Presentation House Gallery in Vancouver, Brancolini Grimaldi in London, Project B Contemporary in Milan and Daniel Faria Gallery in Toronto. Expect to see Eaton back in Hyeres in 2013 for the city's annual fashion and photography fest.

One of the stand-out artists in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, Liz Deschenes (born 1966 in Boston) also participated in the 2012 Daegu Photo Bienniale and recently had shows at Melas Papadopoulos Gallery in Athens, the Art Institute of Chicago, Bielefelder Kunstverein, Hunter College/Times Square Gallery and Miguel Abreu in New York. Her photographs have recently entered the collections of a number of key institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art. A new series of minimalist photograms is on view at the Secession, Vienna's leading contemporary art center, through February 2013.

Matthew Brandt (born 1982 in Los Angeles) is no ordinary landscape photographer. His most recent solo exhibition, entitled Lakes, Trees and Honeybees and held at Chelsea's Yossi Milo Gallery, featured a series of works whose process of creation involved the use of elements from their subject matter-c-prints depicting Western US lakes and reservoirs, for example, were submerged for days or weeks at a time in water taken from these same bodies of water until the desired alteration in color was achieved, while both the paper and ink on and with which Trees were printed were made by Brandt from the trees he photographed in George Bush Park near Houston, TX. The photographer has also taken part in a number of group shows of late, including Surface Tension at The Center for Photography at Woodstock, Photography Is at Higher Pictures in New York, After Image: The Photographic Process(ed), curated by James MacDevitt, at Cerritos College Art Gallery in Norwalk, CA, MOTA at See Line Gallery in Los Angeles, The Crystal Chain at Invisible Exports in New York and New Photography in Palma at Mallorca Landings in Palma de Mallorca.

Lucas Blalock (born 1978 in Asheville, NC) doesn't graduate from the MFA program at UCLA for several months (he already holds degrees from Bard and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture), but awareness for his unique brand of photography is increasing at a rapid pace. 2012 proved to be an especially busy year for him, with participation in exhibitions at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, On Stellar Rays, Higher Pictures, Marc Jancou Contemporary, 7Eleven Gallery, Marianne Boesky Gallery and MoMA PS1 in New York, Richard Telles Fine Art in Los Angeles, Devening Projects + Editions in Chicago, Crac Alsace in Altkirch and Shanaynay in Paris. New York-based gallery Ramiken Crucible also presented a solo booth of his work at Frieze London's Frame section this past October. Coming up in 2013: the UCLA Graduate Open Studios at the New Wight Gallery in Los Angeles in March and a group show at Albert Baronian Gallery in Brussels in May.
