To be honest, I didn't really care whether or not Elger Esser was doing anything in 2012; he is one of my favorite photographers and I planned to squeeze him in anyway. Fortunately for the purposes of this list, however, he has no less than four solo exhibitions, three group exhibitions and a fellowship at the Hanswe-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK), Delmenhorst Institute for Advanced Study this year. The seven shows he has scheduled take place in spaces that span Western Europe: LVR-LandesMuseum, Bonn, Galleria Alessandra Bonomo, Rome, Katz Contemporary, Zurich, Lichte Weite Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Oldenburg, Galerie d’art du Conseil général, Hôtel de Castillon, Aix-en-Provence, Stadtgalerie, Kiel and Salone degli Incanti – ex Pescheria, Trieste. Esser hasn't totally ignored the US this year, however: his Voyage en Egypte exhibition was on view through February 18 at Rose Gallery, Los Angeles.
