The Delhi Auto Expo 2014 kicked off today. Normally an Indian car show wouldn’t be big news for Americans, but take a look at some of these interesting CUVs slated for the Indian market.
The wildest by far is the Renault KWID (seen above), a concept that looks to be a pumped-up Rav4 from the ‘90s. The KWID features very short overhangs on both ends and flaunts massive wheels, which screams “Group B rally car” a little bit more than “economical youth-mobile of emerging India.” Hopefully, they'll make it in 4WD. Renault also revealed its intriguing powerplant, a 1.2L turbo hybrid. Additionally, the KWID is the first car we've ever seen that is being marketed with a drone partner. The little baby copter is meant as a traffic scout that will help with routing GPS.
Volkswagen’s offering should look rather familiar; it’s the TaigunConcept from the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show, which scoots around to the tune of a 1.0L turbocharged three-pot and six-speed manual. Although the rally-spec Renault has little chance of leaping the pond, this VW could potentially make the jump in an enlarged, upscale form for the US domestic market.
Worth an honorable mention is Chevy’s Spark-on-stilts, the Adra Concept. No word yet on powertrain or features, but it's hard to imagine driving that thing without a huge grin on your face.
And in the world of cars that have sliding doors but aren't minivans, Honda released the XS-1 Vision. It's based on a previous Honda concept, the M/M, which stands for man maximum, machine mininum, and was built as a creative design study that shows the direction the company is headed with future CUVs. Surprisingly, you can fit seven people in this thing!
