The annual Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest took place with some changes due to inclement weather, but one contestant named "Glizzy Lizzy" stole the show all off the strength of her name.
The event took place on Tuesday in its usual location on Coney Island, with Joey Chesnut and Miki Sudo defending their championship against several competitors. The women's division went up first, with Sudo going for her ninth title in a bout she barely won by downing 39 and a half hot dogs in under 10 minutes, according to CNN. However, that wasn't the biggest moment that grabbed people's attention.
A competitor named Elizabeth "Glizzy Lizzy" Salgado made her Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest debut on Tuesday, and people on social media couldn't get enough of the California native's nickname. Over the years, the word "glizzy" has been used to describe a hot dog, and is often used in crude jokes. However, Salgado used it to her advantage despite falling short in the competition.
"Hell naw," Freddie Gibbs tweeted regarding Salgado's nickname. Another person wrote, "I've been searching for a scrappy underdog, and glizzy lizzy is it." A third person tweeted, "Glizzy Lizzy is a phenomenal nickname."
After Sudo took home the belt, the men's division was stricken with an hour-long delay and later canceled by the New York Police Department due to thunderstorms hitting the area. The event picked back up after two hours and Joey Chesnut won his 16th title in 17 years after eating 62 hot dogs during the 10-minute contest.
"What a rollercoaster emotionally," Chestnut said during ESPN's telecast, referring to the weather delay. "They told us it was canceled. We weren't sure we were going to eat today, and I'm just happy. It's the Fourth of July and I got to eat some hot dogs and get a win."
