The Toronto Blue Jays may have lost out on Shohei Ohtani, but his decision to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers seems to have not been money-related.
According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet, the Blue Jays' best offer to Ohtani was "right there" with the 10-year $700 million contract the Dodgers offered.
The specific amount offered wasn't disclosed, but Nicholson-Smith explains that the "right there" term would signify that the total Rogers Communications had offered was well over $600 million.
Alongside the ludicrous bids during the Ohtani sweepstakes was a wild Friday that saw fans tracking a plane on the way to Toronto that many thought belonged to the Japanese native.
The Sportsnet report also mentions a conspiracy that explains that Ohtani's agents had used the Jays as leverage to get Los Angeles to increase their offer.
Although that could amount to speculation, many Jays fans are trying to find ways to cope with losing out on the biggest free agents in recent history.
Despite Ohtani signing with the Dodgers, the Jays have shown they are willing to spend to improve their team.
MLB Trade Rumors recently linked the Jays to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Cody Bellinger, and Matt Chapman.
