Now, it's official. Dwight Howard is a member of the Houston Rockets. Just a little while ago, the Rockets held a press conference welcoming Howard to H-Town, with a four-year, $88 million contract.
While this may seem like deja vu for DH, considering the Los Angeles Lakers held a press conference for him 11 months ago, Howard still did much of the same this time around, like frequently cracking a smile, telling some jokes, exuding positive energy and stressing his optimism. But, of course, there were some new perspectives and insight that we can learn from this presser with the Rockets. Here are the 5 Things We Learned From the Dwight Howard Press Conference.
He's no longer "Superman," he's "RocketMan."
Judging from Dwight's reaction as they announced that Howard was no longer "Superman" and should be referred to as "Rocketman," DH had nothing to do with the nickname change. Either way, it's probably going to stick. Plus, does Howard really want to have the same nickname as someone who has heavily criticized him for leaving the Lakers?
The trip to Aspen was full of signs which helped him make his decision.
Howard said that he believes in signs. When DH went off to Aspen to contemplate what team he would choose for the foreseeable future, he said that he encountered plenty of people from Houston who advised him to join the Rockets. All in all, that was what basically persuaded him to join the Rockets. Really, Dwight? Really? So, if a ton of people said, "hey Dwight, play alongside Kobe for another couple years," you would really take them on their word? C'mon, fam!
Howard's going to make a difference off-the-court. You know what that means.
At one point, Dwight Howard made it a point to say that he was going to make a difference on and off the court. Sadly, in our sick, twisted yet logically thinking head, we figured that Howard was referring to playing the Robin to James Harden's Batman by dropping buckets on the court, as well as making it rain on those H-Town strippers off the court.
Or, when Dwight said making a difference, did he mean by increasing Houston's population by getting some additional baby mamas? Either way, he's definitely going to make some sort of difference.
There's music videos on the horizon?
Even though Howard is going to start working with head coach Kevin McHale on Monday, there's still going to be plenty of downtime with his new teammates. So, don't be surprised to see a music video featuring Dwight and Chandler Parsons, or as DH called it, "Montell Jordan and Timberlake." Yeah, and give Harden the directorial chair and we're in for one ratchet/straight BET Uncut-esque production.
There were plenty of subliminal shots going around.
It all started when Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said "it's just stupid" that people think Howard smiling means he doesn't take the game of basketball seriously. Dwight also commented on how chemistry off the court is especially important and he wouldn't want to be around people who are frowning. Are you hearing all of this, Kobe? He also pointed out that over the last two years, he's developed a thick skin that will help him going forward. Hmm. We wonder what number of people he's talking about here?
Dwight, you're working on a clean slate, don't start taking subliminal shots already.
