Car tuners of the world, you're going to want to take a seat. We have some sad news. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X will be the last generation of Evos. "Mitsubishi Motors does not have any plans to design a successor with the current concept, as a high-performance four-wheel drive gasoline-powered sedan,” a company spokesperson told Automotive News.
It was a little more than 10 years ago when Mitsubishi finally listened to its American fans and brought the Evo VIII to the United States. The rally-inspired, turbocharged four-wheel drive was a perfect choice for those eager to customize. But that customer base is no longer a part of the Japanese manufacturer's plans. Last fall President Osamu Masuko said Mitsubishi's strength is in pickups, crossovers, and SUVs and that in-house sedans would be deprioritized.
Mitsubishi hasn't announced when exactly it'll stop producing the Evo X, but plan on it being sooner than later. The current generation has already been around for seven years, much longer than past iterations lasted.
