After being an NFL official for 24 seasons, Mike Carey has found himself a cushy retirement gig/free paycheck in the form of being an "officiating expert" for CBS football. This is a new trend for networks that seems to be following in the footsteps of sideline reporters as being essential to any broadcast. Neither position adds anything, but it's there for....some reason. It's a job that literally you or I could do, as it seems to involve nothing more than making judgments after watching slo-mo replays from your couch.
As far as we know FOX began the trend by hiring ex-official Mike Pereira a couple of seasons ago, his "analysis" appeared to be roughly 50-50, CBS saw this and thought it was a good enough idea to hire their own in-house expert. And here's the result captured in a Vine with Carey undercut almost immediately on a fumble that got overturned (despite no real evidence that it should've been) in tonight's matchup between the Chargers and Broncos Peyton Manning/Emmanuel Sanders.
In fairness to Carey, I've seen Pereira mess it up several times as well. Still, Carey felt it necessary to correct the on-field refs through his Twitter feed:
