A few hours ago he was sitting at 498 career home runs. Three at-bats later Albert Pujols made history by launching No. 500. Not long ago that gaudy number was a shoe-in to baseball immortality via the Hall of Fame. But we live in an era where we're suspicious of pretty much every athletic accomplishment. We feel certain that Albert has been clean throughout his career, which is good for the game. Hopefully we won't be eating those words someday.
With his multi-homer night Pujols becomes the 26th player in history to reach 500. That alone is pretty impressive, but when you consider that seven of those guys have been tied to PEDs, Albert becomes just the 19th player all time to reach the landmark untainted.
