Did you get fired last week? No? Then your week was a thousand times better than DeSean Jackson's. The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver—er, make that the former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver—didn't get "fired," per se, last week. But he did get released by the Eagles on Friday afternoon. And according to one report, he got released because the Eagles suspected him of having close ties to several gang members from the Los Angeles area. Jackson vehemently denied that report in a statement that he released shortly after being released. But the perception is that the Eagles didn't like the way that Jackson carried himself off the field, and that they weren't willing to overlook it for the sake of what he has been able to do on the field. So he's going to start running with a new NFL team soon.
Jackson wasn't the only sports person who fell on hard times last week, though. Thankfully, there weren't any other pro athletes who were accused of being gang members. But there were quite a few who suffered shortcomings in other areas of their lives. From one of Jackson's own teammates who caught hell from NFL fans after the wide receiver was released to an NBA player who reportedly got "catfished" by a gay man who then posted naked photos of the player online, these are the 10 Sports People Who Had a Worse Week Than You.
Ray Rice
Date: 3/27/2014
Last month, the Ravens running back was arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting his fiancée Janay Palmer inside of the Revel Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J. And last week, he was formally indicted on an aggravated assault charge. So he will now have to go through the legal process in order to try and prove his innocence. We imagine that was not what he had in mind for his NFL offseason. However, the couple is getting married. Awkward.
Former NBA Player Quinton Ross
Date: 3/24/2014
Ross died last Monday. Except, well, he didn't. The New York Post erroneously reported that Ross had been murdered, stuffed inside of a trash bag, and then buried in Queens, N.Y. But the truth of the matter is that the former New Jersey Nets player wasn't killed. It was a different Quinton Ross that was found. So he had to spend the majority of his week calling friends and family to inform him that he was, in fact, still alive.
Paul George
Date: 3/23/2014
WHO WANTS TO SEE PAUL GEORGE NAKED?! Uhhh…not us. But early last week, a gay man named "Paul" took to his Tumblr and posted a bunch of naked photos of the Pacers star. He also claimed that he had obtained the photos by pretending to be a woman and "catfishing" George. George later tried to deny that he had been duped into sending the photos to "Paul" and claimed that he knew the girl who had sent the photos to him.
But he refused to elaborate and it made him look even worse than he did before he said anything.
DeSean Jackson
Date: 3/28/2014
As we mentioned in the intro, the Eagles released D-Jax on Friday. Why? Well, they're still not really saying. The speculation is that they did it because of his alleged gang ties. But we'll probably never know exactly why they wanted to part ways with a guy who was their No. 1 receiver last season. At any rate, Jackson needs a job. Anyone looking for a speedy Pro Bowl receiver who's just entering into his prime?
Riley Cooper
Date: 3/28/2014
The second that DeSean Jackson got released by the Eagles, all eyes were suddenly on Cooper. Reason being, the wide receiver caused a ton of controversy last year when he got caught using the N-word at a concert but remained on the Eagles roster. So when the Eagles decided to sign him to a new contract this offseason and then released Jackson, a lot of people didn't like it. And they let Cooper know about it on Twitter.
Chris Culliver
Date: 3/28/2014
The 49ers cornerback continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons. Last year, he was the guy who came out and openly admitted that he wouldn't want to have a gay teammate. And late last week, trouble found him again as he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident in San Francisco.
According to police, Culliver hit a bicyclist on Friday morning and then attempted to flee the scene of the crime. Someone who saw him hit the cyclist then tracked him down and tried to corner him with his car until police arrived. But Culliver responded by threatening the driver with brass knuckles and taking off in his vehicle. So he's now facing a felony hit-and-run charge and a felony weapons possession charge. How much longer are the Niners going to keep this guy around?
Dez Bryant
Date: 3/26/2014
Two years ago, the Cowboys receiver got arrested for allegedly assaulting his mom. And at the time, Dallas responded by forcing him to follow a bunch of rules. For instance, they made him promise to be home by midnight every night and forbid him from going to strip clubs. According to an ESPN Dallas story that was written last week by Cowboys reporter Calvin Watkins, those rules are still in effect, too. And Bryant didn't take too kindly to Watkins telling the whole world about it. So he sent him a nasty tweet and made himself look really bad in the process.
Mike Williams
Date: 3/23/2014
While watching some NCAA Tournament games last Sunday night, the Buccaneers wide receiver and his brother Eric Baylor had some sort of disagreement. There's been no official confirmation about what the two were arguing about. But it ended with Baylor allegedly stabbing Williams in the leg with a small knife. Baylor turned himself into police the following day and was charged with aggravated domestic violence.
Fortunately, Williams is going to be OK and only needed three stitches to patch up the stab wound. But still, getting stabbed by anyone, let alone your own brother, is never a good thing.
Brian Scalabrine
Date: 3/25/2014
The White Mamba is in his first season as an NBA assistant coach. And unfortunately, it sounds like it could also be his last. Early last week, Warriors head coach Mark Jackson reassigned Scalabrine and essentially kicked him off of his coaching staff without giving much of an explanation. Warriors ownership has reportedly been happy with Scalabrine's performance on the bench this season. But Jackson wasn't. So he sent Scalabrine packing and it could mark the beginning of the end of the former NBA player's coaching career.
The Poor Kid Who Got Crossed Over by Hot Sauce
Date: 3/27/2014
You didn't think we were going to do this list and not mention this, did you? That kid's poor ankles are probably still on ice.
