Is it just us, or does it feel like 2014 is shaping up to be an especially bad year for a lot of sports-related people out there? We're less than three weeks into the new year—19 days, to be exact—and we already have at least four or five people (hi, Dwyane Wade, J.R. Smith, Geno Smith, and Dennis Rodman!) who are likely going to end up on our 20 Sports People Who Had a Worse Year Than You list in December. And sports-related people are finding all sorts of ways to fail so far this year. From problems in their personal lives to troubles on the court and field, they're seemingly doing whatever they can right now to make their lives a living hell. We imagine that this is not the way they saw their years playing out.
It's been rough, to say the absolute least, for a lot of folks in the sports world. And judging by the last week, it's only going to get rougher. Because once again, we saw a whole lot of struggle in the world of sports over the course of the last seven days. Here are the 10 Sports People Who Had a Worse Week Than You.
Davone Bess
Date: 1/16/2014
If the only thing that the Browns wide receiver did this week was post a photo of some weed to his Twitter page, his week wouldn't have been that bad. Sure, he would have gotten into some trouble for it—especially since he did the same exact thing back in December—but the trouble would have blown over in a few weeks. Unfortunately, though, Bess followed that stunt up by getting arrested on Friday for allegedly attacking a police officer at an airport. And that incident is not going to just "blow over" anytime soon. Bess is in some serious trouble right now, and doing stuff like this isn't going to help him, either.
Kellen Winslow
Date: 1/17/2014
How embarrassed must the Jets tight end be at the moment? Back in November, he got caught with a bunch of synthetic marijuana in his car. And on Friday, the police report from that incident was released. In it, it was revealed that a woman called the cops on Winslow not for smoking marijuana but for masturbating in the front seat of his car outside of a Target in East Hanover, N.J. Yes, masturbating in his car…outside of a Target. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the police report also reveals that cops found two containers of Vaseline in his car when they responded as well as the synthetic marijuana. Winslow denied the masturbation angle of the story through a statement he released. But whether that part of the story turns out to be true or not, Winslow looks like a fool right now.
Ryan Tannehill's Wife Lauren
Date: 1/15/2014
Recently, the Dolphins quarterback's wife returned a Nissan Rogue that she rented in south Florida and accidentally left something inside of it. No big deal, right? People leave things in rental cars when they return them all the time. However, most don't leave AR-15 rifles in the trunk. That's what Lauren did, though, and it resulted in the next person who borrowed the car calling the police. Fortunately, the gun is registered to Ryan Tannehill so neither Lauren nor her husband will be charged with any crime as a result of the mishap. But can you imagine what might have happened if that gun got into the wrong hands? Yikes.
Whoever Designed the 2014 NBA All-Star Game Jerseys
Date: 1/16/2014
How would you feel if you worked hard on something and then, when you released it to the world, everyone—and we do mean everyone—hated it? You would probably feel pretty bad about yourself, right? Well, that's how the designer of the NBA's 2014 All-Star Game jerseys must feel right now. The adidas designer took a shot and tried to do something really innovative with the jerseys, but…no. Just no. We hate them, and we feel bad for all the players who are going to have to wear them.
Arian Foster
Date: 1/13/2014
The Texans running back has a baby on the way! And that should be good news, right? The only problem is that he's not having the baby with his wife. Instead, he's having it with a 20-year-old college student named Brittany Norwood who claims that Foster got her pregnant last fall and then tried to convince her to have an abortion. She's now suing Foster for child support and for causing "emotional distress" by trying to talk her into an abortion. And Foster appears to be all broken up about the entire situation. The baby isn't due until June, either, so things are probably only going to get worse for him as he moves forward.
Nick Young
Date: 1/15/2014
On Wednesday night, the Lakers guard got fouled hard by Suns center Alex Len. And he didn't appreciate it. So he got up and started spazzing on both Len and his teammate Goran Dragic and threw several punches in the process. He was later suspended for a game without pay. But the worst part was that none of his teammates came to his aid during the brief melee and didn't seem all that concerned about helping him out. A few apologized to him later. But that didn't do him much good in the moment.
Michael Crabtree
Date: 1/19/2014
The 49ers wide receiver just had to make Richard Sherman mad last summer, huh? According to a Seattle Times report, Crabtree refused to shake Sherman's hand at a charity event that Larry Fitzgerald held last summer. And as a result of that, Sherman flipped out after he helped break up a last-minute pass from Colin Kaepernick to Crabtree during the NFC Championship Game last night. Sherman then ripped him in his post-game interview. He ripped him in his post-game press conference. He ripped him on Twitter. And, well, let's just say that Crabtree is probably wishing he'd just shaken Sherman's hand last summer. It would have saved him a lot of trouble.
Javaris Crittenton
Date: 1/15/2014
Last April, the former NBA guard was indicted on murder charges. Police believe that he killed a 22-year-old woman named Julian Jones in 2011 in retaliation after he and a friend were robbed by one of the woman's associates. So he was already in a ton of trouble with the law. But on Wednesday morning, he managed to get himself into even more trouble when police descended upon his Fayatteville, Ga. home at around 6 a.m. and indicted him on drug charges. They believe he was part of a larger group of people who sold marijuana and cocaine in the Atlanta area just months before his indictment for murder. And he's now got a long legal battle ahead of him.
Darren Sharper
Date: 1/18/2014
The former NFL star might be in a lot of trouble right now. On Friday, he was arrested on suspicion of rape stemming from not one but two different incidents that have taken place over the course of the last six months. He's reportedly been linked to a sexual assault that took place in Los Angeles in October 2013 as well as one that took place this month (since he was arrested, the New Orleans Police Department has also revealed that they are looking into a sexual assault accusation made against Sharper in September 2013). He's obviously innocent until proven guilty. But this is a situation that he's now going to have to spend most of 2014 dealing with.
Clark the Cub
Date: 1/13/2014
You know how we know it was a bad week for sports-related people? Even a sports mascot had it rough! The Cubs announced that this cuddly little cub is their new mascot…and everyone seemed to hate it. Deadspin readers, in particular, were merciless on the mascot and really let him have it. It doesn't get any worse than that.
