With just a few days remaining before most NFL teams open up their 2014-15 seasons, the last thing that any of them need right now is distractions. And yet, that's what at least one NFL team is being subjected to at the moment.
A short time ago, TMZ Sports revealed that Jets rookie wide receiver Quincy Enunwa—a sixth-round draft pick out of Nebraska—was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly taking part in a fight inside of a hotel in New Jersey. Police haven't revealed why Enunwa was involved in the fight or what the fight was over. But Enunwa was charged with simple assault after his arrest and later released.
The good news for the Jets is that Enunwa was actually cut by the team on Monday before being added to their practice squad. The bad news is that Enunwa is technically still a part of their organization, so Jets coach Rex Ryan is probably going to have to devote at least a little bit of time to answering questions about Enunwa's arrest in the near future. And with the Jets preparing to play the Raiders on Sunday, it couldn't have come at a worse time.
UPDATE:
As it turns out, Enunwa was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident. According to documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Enunwa was arrested after he allegedly grabbed a woman by her ankle and pulled her off a bed at a hotel on Sunday. He pleaded not guilty to the simple assault charge that was later filed against him.
