"Bank On Me" came about while SonReal pondered on the feeling of isolation during the pandemic, knowing he could always count on one person: himself.

If you can’t count on anyone else, SonReal wants you to know you can bank on him. The British Columbia-born pop/hip-hop act just released his new single “Bank On Me,” along with the accompanying music video.

Reflecting on the loneliness of the past year, “Bank On Me” is about knowing you can count on yourself. With SonReal’s signature optimism, the feel-good track makes the best out of an isolating time.

“I wrote this song over Zoom with my producer Trevor Muzzy in my mom’s spare bedroom. I think there’s something about having to be more crafty in COVID times that has made us artists have to dig a bit deeper, and it’s definitely made me push harder creatively,” SonReal tells Complex Canada.

The tongue-in-cheek music video follows an isolated man in the forest after the end of the world. He attempts to survive while facing bird attacks, bear traps, and foraging mushrooms.

“The concept for this video came together over FaceTime with my two best friends, [director] Dane Collison, and [manager]Byron Wilson, and we knew we had something special,” says SonReal. “We literally couldn’t stop laughing coming up with these scenes. We put months of prep into shooting, and in a place where it rains literally everyday in the winter, Squamish, B.C. gave us two amazing days to shoot in. It’s one of those videos you can’t re-create.”

“Bank On Me” is SonReal’s first track since the release of the deluxe version of his album The Aaron LP last year. He’s been nominated for six Juno awards, with his last nod being for “Video of the Year” in 2019.

With the release of “Bank On Me,” SonReal is asking his fans to record videos of themselves doing good deeds, giving winners $1500 per month so they can “Bank on SonReal.”
