An innocent woman walking with her child was caught in the crossfire of a Friday afternoon shooting in Chicago. ABC7 Eyewitness News is reporting the woman was Dwyane Wade’s cousin.

According to ABC7, police said the woman was walking with a man and the child, who was in a stroller. Two men reportedly approached that man and opened fire around 3:30 p.m.

Wade’s cousin was struck in the head and arm, and was later tragically pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Investigators said she was not the intended victim.

Though the shooting remains under investigation, one person is being questioned by police. The violence took place in Chicago’s Parkway Gardens neighborhood. ABC7 reports a relative has taken custody of the child.

Wade, who signed with the Chicago Bulls this offseason, is not currently in Chicago. He is an outspoken activist against gun violence. He joined fellow NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, and Chris Paul in making a powerful speech at last month’s ESPYs.

“The endless gun violence in places like Chicago, Dallas, not to mention Orlando, it has to stop,” Wade said in that speech. “Enough is enough.”

His mother, Chicago-based Baptist preacher Jolinda Wade, participated in an ESPN roundtable (“An Undefeated Conversation: Athletes, Responsibility, and Violence”) that focused on gun violence in Chicago. The roundtable aired on Thursday night.
